[Better large on black!] Reposting a few more of my favorite Paris photos for new contacts who may not have seen them. Here's the description:

Night was falling quickly, but on this beautiful evening in early Spring I couldn't stop taking pictures. I didn't have a tripod with me so I was leaning the camera along the bridge where I was standing. All of a sudden a bateau mouche - an open-air tour boat with very bright floodlights - passed by and lit up the Quai d'Orsay for a few short seconds, adding a magical golden glow to this entire scene. I shot it at f/5 at 1/25 second and ISO 1600. I was pleased at how well it turned out!

The church spire on the left is the American Church in Paris. Here is some information about it:
The American Church in Paris is the first American church established outside the United States. It started in 1814, when it was officially chartered and the first sanctuary was built in 1857. The present site located on 65 Quai d'Orsay 75007, Paris, France, dates back to 1930. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_American_Church_in_Paris

[Four images here for you, Flickr friends -- of Paris -- all mostly neutral tones and each a glimpse of the human side of Paris. Scroll down for the other three.]

Technical note: I did selective color treatment here in PS, removing green, cyan, magenta, and blue, as it was late afternoon and the day's light was fading when I took the picture. I didn't have a tripod, so no chance to get a long exposure and recover the dim colors with a long exposure. I used a very slight bit of blur to soften the mood, then used Channel Mixer to give an overall warm toned effect.

Description: Red Lanterns on Rue du Temple!! One more reason to love Paris and France: a country that has accepted diverse cultures for centuries. How delightful to discover this scene as I was wandering around the Marais, on Chinese New Year 2007. I had come to Paris to photograph historic cafes for a series I am working on, and was crossing through the Marais looking for motifs. I wasn't expecting this: Ancient China meets Rue du Temple in Paris!! My dear, lovely, fascinating Paris.....you are full of surprises!

Thanks for stopping by everyone! I love this sky and wanted to share with you the following quote:

"Whatever we do, wherever we go, whatever happens on this crowded surface of interactions constituting our world, there is also the sky. The sky is perhaps the simplest example of space, but it is a very important symbol as well. No matter how tangled, crowded, and intense our activities might be, the sky is present too....directly above everything.

"The sky is a familiar -- we might even say 'local' -- representative of space, and as such, partakes of our typical concern with boundaries. Though it can be contemplated in its vastness, openness, and depth, even the sky is related to as a boundary -- an enclosing spherical surface. However, no sooner do we relate to it in this way then are we reminded, in that very act, of the even larger, more open spaces of solar system, galaxy, and universe." - Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, (Time Space and Knowledge, Dharma Publishing, Berkeley 1977, p. 3.)
Rita Crane Photography: night / architecture / lights / sculpture / Jeanne D'Arc at the Sacre Coeur, Paris

Rita Crane Photography posted a photo:

Montmartre is the tallest hill in Paris, and after the Eiffel Tower it is the tallest place in Paris. The statue of Joan of Arc - standing gallantly in front of the glowing basilica - contrasted beautifully against the twilight sky where I could see her from afar. She makes the photo for me, bringing a human touch to the grandeur. If Joan of Arc were alive today she would be leading us all to understand the importance of climate change. www.climatecrisis.net She would have been on the front lines of this issue, I am sure of it. Even though I am American, for some reason Joan of Arc is a powerful inspiration to me. Here she is, in front of the magnificent Sacre Coeur, overlooking one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Some photos by other photographers on Flickr of Joan of Arc at the Sacre Coeur where you can see the statue in more detail: www.flickr.com/search/?q=joan of arc sacre coeur&w=all

Some photos by other photographers on Flickr of Joan of Arc at the Sacre Coeur where you can see the statue in more detail: www.flickr.com/search/?q=joan of arc sacre coeur&w=all

Early Morning Rooftops, Halberstadt

Rita Crane Photography posted a photo:

This is part of the Set about Halberstadt, my father's home town: www.flickr.com/photos/44548980@N00/sets/72157600287407882...

From the set about my father, the LIFE photographer Ralph Crane. Here's my favorite of the set that you can see here in its entirety: www.flickr.com/photos/44548980@N00/sets/72157600287407882/ This is the traditional view of a village - as the rising sun touches her rooftops, the sky is witness to the beauty of nature that endures, and the freedom of space where our minds can open wide. I love the trees and clouds in this photo, winter time, and full of nature's beautiful design. The patterns of the homes, so carefully made and full of loving touches, cheerful red roofs, wonderful geometry, ancient building techniques. People have lived here for centuries and this feels like a peaceful and beautiful place to be. Sorry for such a small photo, it's all I have. At the time I was just taking snapshots with my Fuji Finepix, not trying to make special photos, just recording my trip to my father's home town.

Here in this view, one doesn't feel or know the difficulties that have occurred beneath these rooftops, in a town of former East Germany that has been through the world wars and then the Soviet occupation. One sees only charm and beauty as Halberstadt once again rebuilds after another war. The beauty of nature, of place, and creative effort will endure.

(Loose translation of the name "Fontaine des Quatres Parties du Monde": "Fountain of the Four Corners of the Earth"....)
After an afternoon of taking photos of historic cafes in the Montparnasse district and walking back to the Seine the long way, it was a wonderful surprise to turn the corner and come upon this beautiful refreshing sight at the south end of Jardin du Luxembourg known as Jardin Marco Polo. The park was already closed as it was during winter hours. In a quiet spot where only the occasional jogger ran by, I set up my tripod. It was a pleasure spending an hour or so here, listening to the splashing of the water, and enjoying the dazzling light shining on the statues. They are a collaboration of four different artists. Here is some great information about this wonderful park in the Latin Quarter of Paris. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jardin_du_Luxembourg
