Three photos at this post, Flickr friends! Scroll down for the other two.....
I couldn't believe my eyes when I emerged from the dimly lit interior of Notre Dame --- after enjoying the soprano singing vespers --- and walked into the soft rain showers of the evening. What a wonderful surprise to be greeted by this illuminated sky full of rich color! The shining pavement reflecting a glorious sunset shone against the dark buildings, and people with their umbrellas were in silhouette, framed by the illuminated lamposts. Paris between day and night! It was one of those moments when you just grab your camera and do your best to capture the magic! .

Quelle belle surprise inattendue!

On my way to visit Notre Dame it started to rain. When I saw this scene, I had to stop and spend some time in this little garden right next to the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame. It was a peaceful Paris afternoon....grey weather....yet what a visual feast I had just encountered unexpectedly! The patterns and shapes were inviting me to photograph them, and it was remarkable to find such color in winter! The ornamental cabbage's magenta contrasting dramatically with the juicy green grass. I enjoyed a good hour here, taking many pictures. (There are two others below.)

Notre Dame & Ile St. Louis After a Storm, Paris

[Details better seen large on black. Just click on the picture to see it in the lightbox.] Reposting this for new contacts & those who never saw it the first time...one of my favorite photos in my Paris set, that i felt like sharing again.

DESCRIPTION: Luckily I went out that afternoon during a storm .... or I would have missed this sky. As I crossed the Pont D'Austerlitz over the Seine, just east of the Ile St. Louis, I stopped in my tracks and got my camera out immediately. The sky was stunningly beautiful. The natural arch made by the clouds breaking up after the storm...just amazing...and the scene reminded me of the Dutch masters' paintings full of moody greys and silver light. I love this point of view on the historic center of Paris: Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cite, and the houses along the Quai de Bethune of Ile St. Louis.

Here is a link to a wonderful series of old maps of the historic center of Paris, showing the development around the Ile de la Cite and Ile St. Louis from the 1400's to the 1800's.

Paris again, Flickr friends!! It is always a pleasure to share this great city and country that I can't help but love. This image of Notre Dame my new contacts have probably not seen, so here it is for you. I have added a very slight touch of Diffuse Glow to the original photo. I like how it softens the mood of this rainy day.

HERE AT THIS LINK: lefildutemps.free.fr/paris/pont_tournelle.htm is a wonderful presentation about the bridge you see in the foreground, Le Pont de la Tournelle PLUS links to similar presentations on ALL the bridges of Paris!! There are historic engravings and vintage photographs of the bridge over its succession of incarnations since the first wooden bridge that crossed this part of the Seine just east of Notre Dame, in the 1300's. The current bridge was built between 1924 and 1928. For those who love history and vintage photos I heartily recommend a visit to this great site. It presents ALL the bridges of Paris in images that date to the Middle Ages, and include great vintage photographs from the late 1800's and early 1900's as well.

Here is a link to the Chateau de la Tournelle for which this bridge was named. (En francais, but with great historic engravings that give you an idea of what this part of the Seine looked like, along the Quai de la Tournelle, in the 1500's: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%c3%a2teau_de_la_Tournelle.)

And for a little more information, Le Pont de la Tournelle in English: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_de_la_Tournelle

There are four photos posted here. Scroll down for the other three, and for a little history of the cathedral. :o)

Notre Dame is one of my favorite places of Paris. When I lived there years ago I used to go inside to sit down and enjoy the cool darkness and the quiet. In recent visits to Paris, I still enter beautiful Notre Dame at least once, to go listen to the soprano singing vespers and just to Be there. It has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with the amazing beauty of this structure, and the energy there that has grown over the centuries as people of all faiths and walks of life have gone inside to connect with something ineffable but tangible, and greater than themselves. Just a fantastic space!! And if you have a chance to be there around 5:30 or 6:00 PM sit down and wait for the soprano to come sing solo accompanied by the organ, and let the sound wash through you. It is exquisitely beautiful. Although I don't understand the Latin words, the feeling is so very very sincere and moving. Wondrous!

Little secret for those of you who love to find the golden treasures from the angels: look for the little chapel of La Vierge de Lourdes. It's inside along the north wall, near the entrance. Stay there a long while very quietly and watch the candles and the statue, and see what happens. Millions have prayed there. It is a mindspace of gossamer energy that soaks your soul in radiance. It knocked my socks off. And I left the cathedral with eyes of Wonder.

The beauty of Notre Dame in Paris shines through even on this wintry day with its overcast soft sky. I was walking along the banks of the Seine and there she was, all her fine ancient details still with us after all these years! Notre Dame was built on the site of other churches and temples. Here is what wikipedia says about Notre Dame: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre_dame_de_paris which includes this timeline of its construction : 1160. Bishop Maurice de Sully (named Bishop of Paris), orders the original cathedral to be demolished.
1163. Cornerstone laid for Notre Dame de Paris - construction begins
1182. Apse and choir completed.
1196. Nave completed. Bishop de Sully dies.
1200. Work begins on Western Façade.
1225. Western Façade completed.
1250. Western Towers and North Rose Window completed
1250–1345. Remaining elements completed

On my way to visit Notre Dame it started to rain! Out came the umbrellas, out came my camera! I found a spot where the trees spoke to me of symmetry and beauty and waited for people to fill the stage. There were several different groups that came and went .... large groups in a hurry ........Then for a very short and special moment the scene quieted down and only these three passersby appeared. Two of them stopped for a time to watch the Seine below. They were moving slowly and enjoying, like I was, the soft gentle rain on a peaceful Paris afternoon in this little garden right next to the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame.

Gardens of Notre Dame, Jardin de Jean XXVIII, Paris III

Rita Crane Photography posted a photo:

On my way to visit Notre Dame it started to rain! Out came the umbrellas, out came my camera! I found a spot where the trees spoke to me of symmetry and beauty, then waited for people to fill the stage. There were several different groups that came and went .... large groups in a hurry ........Then for a very short and special moment the scene quieted down and only these three passersby appeared. Two of them stopped for a while to enjoy watching the Seine below. They were moving very slowly and enjoying, like I was, the soft gentle rain on a peaceful Paris afternoon in this little garden right next to the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame.
