1966 Jaguar E-type Roadster

I turned up just as this car had been returned to the Edinburgh branch of the Classic Car Club. After I'd asked if I could photograph the car (I was going to anyway but it's polite to ask!) the guy that worked there asked me if I'd like it in a different spot and he was kind enough to re-park it in this position for me.

Silver gran turismo

It's a bit of a shame I had to blur the background as there was some nice textures there but that silver Renault was too intrusive. It would have been ideal if the Renault hadn't been there at all as it made getting a decent angle really tricky but sometimes you just have to work with what you've got.

Newhaven sunset at low tide

I've wanted to photograph a sunset at Newhaven Harbour at low tide for ages now and finally got my chance this evening. It's left me with a real dilemma though as I've ended up with three different shots and I like all of them! I decided to go with this picture first as I thought it was the most cinematic of the three but I'll upload the others at some point.

Hotel Selkirk Bar

Taken at the Hotel Selkirk Bar at Fort Edmonton Park. As I understand it the Hotel Selkirk is an actual working hotel where all the staff dress in period costume and act according to the way that one might expect for a circa 1905 hotel.

The reason that the doorway looks a little blown out is that a couple of guys walked in just as I was taking the shots for this and I had to edit them out as they were ruining the ambience! Also edited out is the girl in period costume that was working behind the bar who rather sweetly, but somewhat out of character, confessed that she didn't know quite what to do when people came in to take photographs. If she'd stood stock still she might have stayed in the photograph! [Edit: I should point out the girl behind the bar was cropped out not Photoshopped out].

In the past I've tended to do most of my post-Photomatix editing in iPhoto because it's so easy to use but for this one I did the majority of my editing in Photoshop. I figure the only way I'll really learn Photoshop is to keep practising and get used to all the myriad of editing options that Photoshop offers. Anyway I edited this in Photoshop first and then did a tiny bit in iPhoto.

I did two versions of this image, both of which I really liked. This is the slightly desaturated of the two images. Here's a link to the first version I did for comparison, the differences are very subtle.

My goal, with both images, was to use HDR techniques but end up with a more realistic looking image and I think I've largely succeeded in that respect.

Taken in Fort Edmonton Park during my trip to Canada in 2008. I have another image taken from the left of this one, and coming from a slightly different angle, that I'll post at a later date.

Festival fireworks

I spent an hour tonight learning how not to take photographs of fireworks. I really kicked myself when I discovered I'd forgotten to reset the ISO to 100 from 400 (a setting I pretty much never change ironically. I never shoot at ISO 400!!). Makes a change from forgetting to re-set the white balance though. Still, I always say there's no substitute for experience!

The paintings you can see are by local artist Robert Rae who was exhibiting his work at the time I took the photograph. Once he has a website I'll be sure to post a link.

Coalhill lights

I tend not to do night-time HDRI's as they can be hard to pull off. I'd set out to photograph this building as a long exposure but I thought I'd do some bracketed shots to see what sort of results I'd get get. Although one of the single exposure shots came out really well (exposure bracketing wasn't designed with HDR images in mind!) I really like the extra detail the HDR processing adds to the metal walkways.
