A Kiss from Hades

Diana Michaels posted a photo:

This image needs an explanation. Even if I tell you that this is a fumarole, it still needs to be explained, right? How about 'solfatara'? Well, this image is taken from above a smokey hole near hot springs, and there is steam coming from it (the brighter side of the image)

A fumarole (Latin 'fumus', smoke) is an opening in a planet's crust, often in the neighborhood of volcanoes, which emits steam and gases [carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen sulfide]

The steam is created when superheated water turns to steam as its pressure drops when it emerges from the ground. The name solfatara, from the Italian solfo, sulfur (via the Sicilian dialect), is given to fumaroles that emit sulfurous gases.

The Hot Springs named Sandhólshver were formed during the violent South Iceland earthquake of 1896. For a long time the hot springs served a practical purpose: heating the surounding houses. The temperature at present is 94°C.

On the picture to the right you can see a little fumarole - notice the smoke coming out directly from the ground. It makes a very particular sound.
