The Team of 1877

Greater Manchester Police posted a photo:

Meet Superintendent Gee and the some of the fine looking team of officers of the Manchester City Police ‘A’ Division, photographed back in 1877.

The ‘A’ Division covered central Manchester and was also home to the force’s headquarters.

This image may have been produced as a memento to mark the retirement of one of the officers – perhaps Superintendent Gee himself. Given that the history of formal policing in Manchester dates back to 1839, some of the men photographed may have been among the first to take the oath and service the public of Manchester in the office of constable.

The designation ‘A’ is still in use today by the Greater Manchester Police division that covers the city centre.

From the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archives.

The Museum enables you to experience what life was really like for these officers in a once busy Victorian police station.

You’ll also see how times have changed and how policing has evolved to meet today’s needs.
