Up to Uluru

J-C-M posted a photo:

The start of the trail that ascends Uluru, closed on this day due to inclement weather. Uluru is considered to be a sacred site by the local aboriginal people, who own this land. They prefer that people not climb the rock, however many still do and the ascent route remains open under an existing agreement with the Australian Government.

Although I didn't climb the rock, I remember scrambling up there as a kid, before the region was historically handed back to the traditional aboriginal owners in 1985. For the average tourist the climb is quite difficult in places and, in my opinion, somewhat overated as a rewarding activity.

J-C-M posted a photo:

Another picture for the shipspotters amongst us -- the HMAS Sydney docked at Station Pier, Port Melbourne.

The HMAS Sydney is an Adelaide class guided missile frigate commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in January 1983.

At launch, the ship was 136 metres (446 ft) long, 13.7 metres (45 ft) wide, and has a draught of 4.5 metres (15 ft). The length was increased to 138 metres (453 ft) in 1987-88 to permit the operation of the S-70B Seahawk from the frigate. Displacement at launch was 3,678 tons; by 2009, various refits and upgrades had increased this to 4,200 tons.

The frigate carries a ship's company of 210. Sydney was the first ship of her class to carry female sailors and officers, requiring the installation of partitioning to some mess decks.
