Looking down on the The Nā Pali Coast from the Kalalau Valley overlook. One of the most beautiful views I have ever seen.

Since I was here for one of my best friends wedding I did not get to shoot a lot. However, I did manage to get a couple keepers. Hope you guys enjoy.

Low Tide - Gustavus Alaska

This shot is from my recent trip to Gustavus Alaska. The town, formerly known as Strawberry Point, is built on an outwash plain created by the glaciers that once filled Glacier Bay National Park. The town provides the only road access into Glacier Bay National Park. However, there is no road into or out of town so all supplies must arrive by air or ferry.

The US Census says there are 429 residents of Gustavus. But based on my observation I would put the number closer to 100. The town has no bars, no restaurants, no movie theaters, or fast food. There are several small stores which sell sundries for a hefty markup and only one store which provides alcohol. It’s a beautiful place but I could never imagine myself living there.

I recently took a trip to Gustavus Alaska for Halibut fishing with the Alaska Anglers Inn. Although the trip's primary purpose was to catch some fish, I was able to sneak out and get some shots too. It helped that the sun didn't set until 10:30 and that the "magic hour" lasted for about two and half hours.

This was taken right across the street from where I was staying. I believe these flowers are called Nootka Lupines. My apologies to the flowers if I am wrong.

Did you know? Sea stars have no brains and no blood. Their nervous system is spread through their arms and their “blood” is actually filtered sea water.

Interesting huh? I ripped that off the National Geographic website on Sea Stars (so it must be true)

I also know that this photo will not get many hits or comments since it doesnt contain any bright colors, cute dogs, cute girls, or anything else that people gravitate towards on flickr. But, I had to post it since it was the first time I was able to get a shot of these buggers without getting wet.

Saturated? I think NOT

I think NOT" />

This is another shot of the best sunset ever. It was shot when the sun was still mostly up. So the color was mostly orange instead of pink.

This is a single exposure. No layers, no masks, no nada. I also didn't saturate this or use GND filters. I only corrected the white-balance which was way off.

Mugu Lagoon

Bakke Photography posted a photo:

This darned sunset just had too much dynamic range to capture it all. This isn't an HDR (though I did contemplate trying). I stacked two GND filters on the horizon and the sky still blew out. And then to top it off, once the sun went down all the color instantly vanished.

This isn’t anywhere near as good as I wanted but since I had to hop a barbwire fence and fall in the mud to get it, I figured I better post it.

I’m a Criminal with a Camera

Bakke Photography posted a photo:

This is a plane on display outside the NAVAIR Point Mugu Naval Base in Ventura County. They have several planes and multiple missiles on display for people to look at and I presume take photos of.

My presumption was wrong.

It took about five minutes before the police descended upon me with lights and sirens to put a stop to my photography. Needless to say, words were exchanged and I was ordered to stop taking photos. The officer told me it’s illegal to take photos of the Naval Base.

I took a major issue with this since I have been on this base multiple times for Air Shows and took HUNDREDS of photos of every plane and building along with thousands of other people. So what’s the problem with taking photos of planes on display out front?

This harassment needs to stop. And don’t anyone go on a rant about the need for national security. That is crap. There is NOTHING you can see from the road and this isn’t a top secret base.

Oh, and after all the officers harsh words he says “I guess its ok for you to take a couple more as long as no planes are landing.”

WTF?

I declined to press about the why photos wouldn’t be allowed if planes are landing, but that also seemed about as asinine as not being allowed to take photos of the planes on display. So I shot off a few more and took off.

Image Details:
Single Exposure
Slight editing in photoshop (i.e. curves, color balance)
Topaz adjust (custom photopop)

This shot is very similar to a previous posting with a few differences. Namely, this shot is mostly sky while the last shot was a 50/50 split of foreground and sky. I prefer this one since it shows how dramatic the sky was that day.

I also processed it mostly in LR3. And I have to say, LR3 really makes processing a bit quicker. I might start using it a bit more now ;)

Taken at Matador State Beach as the water retreated. The image looks quite nice on my monitor, hopefully, it's not too dark on everyone else's monitor.

The light on the water is a local fishing boat. Just off camera is about 30 more boats. I wish I knew what they were fishing for.

Everyone knows what and where this place is.

So, I want to tell everyone about Ludovico Einaudi's music instead. Mr. Einaudi is a contemporary music composer and pianist. An excellent pianist! I recently aquired several of his CDs and I was blown away by how open and accessible his music is. His music is elegant and full of ambient sound and a pure joy to listen to. I recommend giving him a wirl.

If you only listen to one of his songs, try "Primavera". It's on itunes.
