Old roses adorn a front fence. Brattle Street is also known as "Tory Row" because its pre-Revolutionary-War mansions were mostly owned by Loyalist families. Of course, what constituted a "mansion" in those days was fairly modest by modern standards.

It wasn't clear which Oxford college had fielded this boat. But the boat and the boathouse left no doubt about their big sponsor: DELOITTE.

A search of Google reveals that Deloitte sponsors the Pembroke College Boating Club.

I was hoping to see NatBat and Simon Willison at Oxford Geek Night tonight, but even in their absence I had a great time. Awesome keynotes by Gobion Rowlands ("Science and Computer Games: Turning hard data into fun games") and Jon Hicks on building a website "From Design to Deployment."

I've seen finalists doused with flour and strung out with string, even daubed with colorful gels--but this pretty girl, on the right of her friend-group and holding a blue star-balloon, was the most dowsed of all the red carnation-wearers I've seen.

Thus do the serious and hard-working students of Oxford mark their passage up to the next level of effort.
