International Days 2012 Program Guide

The five-day International Days runs Feb. 6-10 at various locations around campus.

A speakers series is among the new features and includes Dr. Gwynne Dyer and Captain Charles Moore. There will also be a global village, outdoor snowboard demonstration, daily coffee and food flavours from around the world, Flag Parade, International Showcase, International education speakers panel, and much more.

Jason Kenney, Federal Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, visited TRU on Jan. 27, 2012 to meet with representatives of TRU World.

Kenney is a the Member of Parliament for Calgary Southeast.

Students gather to promote National Sweater Day 2012, which is Feb. 9. The day will also feature Facilities turning the temperature down by 3 degrees in all buildings. The initiative is also to demonstrate how something that simple can reduce Green House Gas Emissions. That day, log on to www.tru.ca/sustain to see how much energy is being saved.

Actor Lorne Cardinal answers fields questions about the profession from students following a visit on Jan. 30, 2012 to Ginny Ratsoy's Canadian Studies 3120: Aboriginal Dramas in Canada.

Cardinal and Margo Kane were in town performing the Western Canada Theatre production of Michel Tremblay's play 'For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again'. The class read the screenplay as part of their studies and went to see the production on Feb. 1.

Because many of the working professionals tend to be TRU Alumni, the gap between university and career doesn't seem as wide.

Be open to new opportunities, explains Peter Mansbridge, host of CBC Television's The National, during a presentation at TRU on Jan. 19, 2012 as art of the TRU Students' Union Common Voices speaker series.

His big break came as a baggage handler at the airport in Churchill, Man. One day the local CBC radio station manager heard Mansbridge on the public address system, asked him to join the station. Nineteen at the time, Mansbridge thought is sounded like something interesting to do. He started as a music deejay, before suggesting a local news show. The rest, as they say, is history.

Opportunities for Mansbridge have taken him to covering Vietnamese boat people in the 1970s, a 40-hour-plus shift covering 9/11, and two years ago becoming the first Canadian broadcaster to interview a sitting American president (Barack Obama).

Peter Mansbridge, host of CBC Television's The National, responds with a laugh to a question from an audience member. The question being whether there's anything left on his bucket list, led to Mansbridge launching into a second-long impression—complete with old man voice—of an enfeebled old man bent over a cane.

Mansbridge also regaled the audience with tales from his years as a broadcast journalist, which began in Churchill, Man., when as a baggage handler at the local airport, a radio manager heard him on the public address system.
