Street of the Knights. In this street, which still conveys an excellent impression of the 15th and 16th centuries, were most of the Inns of the various nations in the Order of St John. The finest of these is the Auberge de France (on the right), built between 1492 and 1503. Basically a series of club houses for the different 'linguas' (tongues).

Like vaulted ceilings? Visit Rhodes Town. This is part of the Grand Master's Palace and is typical of the architecture. Every ceiling boss represents a shield of the Knights of St John. Luvverly jubberly.

This is one of the iconic statues that 'guard' the harbour in Rhodes Town. Roe Deer are the emblem of Rhodes (obviously) and this is supposed to be where the Colossus was located (although they've proved that isn't the case now).

Anyone who has been knows that one of the main iconic pictures from Rhodes is seeing the two statues with the fort in the background. Unfortunately, the other was missing when we went. One assumes that its being repaired or something. Oh well - its fairly certain that I'll be going back one day (I've been 3 times already!).

This is from 'Ancient Kamiros'; one of the most important archaeological sites on Rhodes (also ruined by the Italians in the 30s!).

On the north-western shore of Rhodes, close To the promontory of Agios Minas (the Ancient Mylantio) lies the third of The island's ancient cities - Kamiros.

Kamiros was one of the three large Doric cities of the island, which united with Ialyssos and Lindos in the 5th century B.C. to create the powerful city - state of Rhodes.

Although it was established by the Dorians, it seems like the first inhabitants of the area must have been Achaeans, as the ruins of an ancient Mycenaean necropolis close to the village of Kalovarda reveal. Kamiros was basically an agricultural society which produced oil, wine and figs. During the city's golden era of the 6th century, it was the first Rhodian city to cut its own coins.

Kamiros is the first city state on the island of Rhodes dated from the late bronze age until 407 BC. It is one of the most important and oldest Greek cities of the Greek world.

This is a 360 degree pano in the courtyard of the Grand Masters Palace in the Old Town of Rhodes (Rodos, the capital). Not come out as I really wanted it too, but thought i'd upload it anyway. Very lo-res as the original is 13 photos and over 20mb.

The Old Town is a World Heiritage Site and is one of, if not the, best preserved medieval city in Europe. It really is fantastic (although the Italians also messed up the restoration of the GMP).

This was the administrative centre of the Knights of St John (Knights Hospitalier). Look 'em up on the web. Fascinating history.

Wouldn't be a photo of Greece without a few columns. These are to be found at the Acropolis in Lindos. Very little of what you see is original. The Italians royally cocked up the restoration in the 30s and so they've more or less had to start again. Looks good though - and there's a lot of history too. Very very interesting place.

Not sure what this bit was - it isn't the Athenian temple I know that... (that comes later). Could have been a very majestic toilet area... or not.

The beautiful St Paul's Bay in Lindos. Possibly not the best time of day to have taken this as half the bay is in shadow, but you get the general idea of how pretty it is (I hope).

A lot of brits get married in the chapel over to the right.

First of many - both of Lindos and Rhodes in general.

We stayed in Lindos and its fantastic (I've been three times now). Very picturesque and traditional (although there is still the tourist tat on offer). Its also fairly quiet; enough nightlife to be enjoyable without a lot of knobheads to spoil it. Also there are tons of restaurants - most of which are pdg.

This is a scene roughly taken from the main beach, giving a good view of the type of houses in the village, sitting beneath the Acropolis - which was heavily fortified and gave protection to the area. I suspect there'll be a few variations on this theme as I go along.

Stayed in the lovely village of Warkworth for my cousin's wedding at the weekend. Lovely place, lovely wedding, lovely people. Many thanks to Caroline and Anth for a great weekend.

Bit overcast so has to b&w (horrible in colour and adds a bit of drama).

Warkworth Castle is an English Heritage property and is very impressive (although didn't go inside).

Last week on my way back from Three Shire Heads, I went on a little detour to see what I could see and I came across this place called the Magpie Lead Mine.

I'm partial to a bit of industrial heritage so it was right up my street. Fascinating looking place, though the visitor centre was closed, so I don't know much about it. Good for the odd piccy though, I know that!

Now I come to think about it, I may have seen this in the distance on one of my perambulations around the Peak, but wouldn't have known what it was...

#12 of 107 - Flask Edge, off the B6054 nr Owler Bar. FB#2131 and an altitude of 395 metres.

I promise I've not taken a photo of just one of these from lots of different angles, but I have to admit they are all looking pretty similar. Messed about with the processing on this just to be different. I know they're boring for most (and sad for most others) but;
* I think they can add something to a landscape in some places;
* they give me something to do when pottering around the Peak;
* I'm finding new places for future treks and photo-ops... and
* I'm very sad and boring.

Really will have to come back here on a nicer day. Quite like the subject, quite like the composition, just struggling with the light and stuff.

The circle isn't exactly Stone Henge, (or Castlerigg) but its OK. When I was there this rather odd lady was wandering around touching all the stones and sitting with her back to them. I'm assuming that she was trying to tap into the natural energy or some other such twaddle.

Taken while on a trig point hunt, which just goes to show the benefits of hunting trig points (or was I on a stone circle hunt and found a trig point... either way, you get to see some good stuff).
