Water and thinners let down the red yellow and blue paint that were roughly mixed and applied with a half-inch (?) flat hog. First to the head/face then with different mixes to other areas.

The loose wash with water and thinners allows mixing and runs with differing densities of colours and paint thicknesses to cover all the canvas. No unpainted area is allowed to remain. As drying is taking place some details such as shadows or highlights are reinforced with marks from a smaller brush size. Further working up being left until the surface is dryer.

Steve left it till the last part of the last session to give us a demonstration of his method. He selected Harry as his subject and on his re-primed bought canvas (he stretches his own) he started his pencil sketch.

Nose usually has lightest area down its length; brightest spot often on bulb of nose with shaded area immediately under; nostrils darkest area when visible; mouth only equally balanced in full frontal; bottom lip usually fuller and in normal lighting therefore light catching with shaded area below; some shading above top lip.

From top left; head overstressed in size;nose centralised but more interesting is 3/4 face; makes away side less visible and near side extended in eye2ear direction.

From middle left; eyes not round, iris 'hangs' from eyelid, pupil may be small or large depending on ambient light etc, light reflected as white 'dot' in painting to correspond to light direction; shadow line on eyelid by lashes and shaded area below the eye and eyelash; critical point for accurate representation is distance from tear duct to nose and from eye to eye.
