We took a detour from our original plan (and I'm really glad we did) for Sunday and headed out to see Antelope Canyon. It's a location on the bucket list of many photographers and after experiencing it in person, I can see why. That tiny little slot above the ground masks an amazing wonder when you head down inside.

Zion National Park- The Narrows

Truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life today, hiking up The Narrows at Zion National Park. At one point along the way I made the comment that if you had told me a year ago, I'd be standing in thigh deep, rushing water, with my tripod and camera trying to get a shot, I'd have said you were insane.

Today, I was not only doing it, but I was have an amazing time doing it and would do it again.

Nashville's moniker, the "Athens of the South", influenced the choice of the building as the centerpiece of the 1897 fair. A number of buildings at the Exposition were based on ancient originals, however the Parthenon was the only one that was an exact reproduction. It was also the only one that was preserved by the city, although the Knights of Pythias Pavilion building was purchased and moved to nearby Franklin, Tennessee.

Major Eugene Castner Lewis was the director of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition and it was at his suggestion that a reproduction of the Parthenon be built in Nashville to serve as the centerpiece of Tennessee’s Centennial Celebration. Mr. Lewis also served as the chief civil engineer for the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad. Originally built of plaster, wood, and brick, the Parthenon was not intended to be permanent, but the cost of demolishing the structure combined with its popularity with residents and visitors alike resulted in it being left standing after the Exposition. In 1895 George Julian Zolnay was "employed to make models for the ornamentation" for the building. [3] Within the next 20 years, weather had defaced the landmark; it was then rebuilt on the same foundations, in concrete, in a project that started in 1920; the exterior was completed in 1925 and the interior in 1931.

I had the opportunity to spend this past weekend with a group of fellow Flickr photographers at Yosemite National Park. I've never been to any of the national parks before and this was one amazing way to kick things off. The scale and grandeur of the place is hard for me to describe in words but I do think I'm hooked on National Parks and can't wait for my next opportunity to visit another park.

The Ahwahnee hotel was designed by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood (who also designed the Zion Lodge, Bryce Canyon Lodge, and Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge), with interior design directed by Dr. Phyllis Ackerman and Professor Arthur Upham Pope.

The site for the hotel is below the Royal Arches rock formation in a meadow area that had served in the past as a village for the native Miwoks, who formerly lived in the valley, and a stables complex known as Kenneyville. The site was chosen for its views of many of the iconic sights in Yosemite, including Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and Glacier Point, and its exposure to the sun allowing for natural heating.

The hotel was constructed from 5,000 tons (4,535 t) of rough-cut granite, 1,000 tons (907 t) of steel, and 30,000 feet (9,140 m) of timber.[5] The 'wood siding' and 'structural timber' on the exterior of the hotel is actually formed of stained concrete poured into molds to simulate a wood pattern.[4] Concrete was chosen as the material for the outside 'wood' elements to add fire resistance to the hotel. The construction lasted 11 months and had a cost of US$1,225,000 upon completion in July 1927.

Tennessee State Capital

The State Capitol was designed by renowned Philadelphia architect William Strickland, who modeled it after a Greek Ionic temple. The lantern is a copy of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1845 and the building was completed fourteen years later in 1859.

The American Society of Civil Engineers has listed the building as a civil engineering landmark in recognition of its innovative construction, which made unusually extensive use of stone and was an early example of the use of structural iron. Both the interior and exterior are built with limestone from a quarry about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the site. Some interior columns were built from single pieces of stone, requiring massive wooden derricks to hoist them into place. Wrought iron, instead of wood, was used for the roof trusses to reduce the building's vulnerability to fire.

Strickland died five years before the building's completion and was entombed in its northeast wall. His son, F. W. Strickland, supervised completion of the structure. William Strickland also designed the Egyptian Revival style Downtown Presbyterian Church, formerly known as First Presbyterian Church, Nashville.

Samuel Dold Morgan (1798–1880), chairman of the State Building Commission overseeing the construction of the Tennessee State Capitol, is entombed in the southeast corner near the south entrance.

Bicentennial Mall State Park

Bicentennial Mall State Park is an urban state park located in the shadow of the State Capitol in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.

The 19 acre (77,000 m²) park, designed to complement the Tennessee Capitol Building, gives visitors a taste of Tennessee's history and natural wonder. It opened June 1, 1996 to serve as a lasting monument to Tennessee's Bicentennial celebration.

Park Rangers, well-versed in Tennessee's historical, natural and recreational attractions, are available to conduct organized tours of the park, give programs to large groups or to simply visit with park visitors about the wonders of Tennessee.

The park also includes erupting geyser fountains, each of which represent a river in Tennessee. The fountains are framed by a large wall, next to which a stream runs to represent the Mississippi River. These fountains are frequented in the summer by many children.

The walls that surround the park have, etched into them, a timeline of Tennessee's history.

The park contains a large grass space (the "Mall") that stretches from the outside auditorium situated adjacent to the front plaza on James Robertson Parkway, to a circle of bells that ring on the hour, located at Jefferson Street. Also built was a three-building complex containing the Farmer's Market, an international market, and a building that hosts a weekly flea market, all located off of Rosa L. Parks Boulevard (formerly 8th Avenue).

Yosemite National Park: Firefall

I didn't have anything for fireworks friday so I thought I'd go with Firefall Friday instead. It's hard to believe that it was 2 weeks ago today I was standing in this spot to see this amazing spectacle of nature. I lost many of the final set of shots I took of this due to CF card corruption issue but thankfully a few shots of this amazing experience survived. IN the final moments of light I zoomed in closer and those shots were lost on the card so I had to try and crop something out of a more distant frame. It was truly fascinating to see the rows and rows of photographers all set up looking up and hoping that the mother nature would oblige us and share this wonderful experience.

For a few weeks in late February, if the water is flowing in Horsetail Fall, photographers and park visitors gather in the waning evening light for an amazing natural display. The 'natural firefall' appears when the angle of the setting sun sets the waterfall ablaze with reds and oranges, like a fire was falling down the cliffs on the shoulder of El Capitan.
