The Dukes of Brittany became the owners of the castle though it was often confiscated for various periods by English Kings. The castle was part the plan to subjugate the rebellious north of England. The original stone Norman castle lacked a 'keep' but a 100-foot high keep of honey-coloured sandstone was constructed at the end of the 12th century by Duke Conan the Little.
Continuing the RAF theme we see Southern Railway "Battle of Britain" Class 34070 "Manston" at Grosmont during the NYMR Autumn Steam Gala. The rain had final stopped but it was getting dark very quickly so the quality of the shot is poor.
Designed for the Southern Railway by its Chief Mechanical Engineer Oliver Bulleid the air-smoothed 4-6-2 Pacific "Battle of Britain" class were built between 1945 -1951 and 110 in total were produced. They were withdrawn from service in 1967 and 20 have been preserved. Manston, seen in BR lined Green with a late crest, is normally based on the Swanage Railway and is owned by Southern Locomotives Ltd and was a very popular visitor to the NYMR

British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 92214 seen at Grosmont during the NYMR Autumn Steam Gala. I had a spirited run form Levisham behind this locomotive and the running was very impressive!
92214 was built by British Railways at Swindon and in 1959 and was withdrawn in October 1965 after a very short career. After spending 15 years at Barry, the locomotive was purchased for preservation by the Peak Railway 9F Loco Co. Ltd. In July 1991 ownership transfered to the 9F Steam Locomotive Charitable Trust Ltd. It was the 117th locomotive to leave Barry.
In June 2010 the locomotive was sold to Grosmont company PV Premier and now resides on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
