From Night Photography Set

Finally got back out for a night shoot. The plan was to photograph and use the light from the super moon. It was cloudy all day and finally with some clearing appearing in the sky we made a last minute decision to head out and shoot. The super moon spent most of the night covered with clouds. However, we did get some interesting shots even with a lot of haze in the sky.
Had a good night out shooting with Dave G. and Adrian.
The coal fired Brayton Point Power Plant and it's cooling towers in Somerset, MA as seen across Mt. Hope Bay. The colors of the clouds, haze, and smoke from the power plant stacks all coming together in the sky are influenced by the power plant's incandescent lighting.

Flares - 2

A little different crop of an image that I had uploaded back in May. I have gone back, looked at this image a number of times, and considered cropping the image in this manner.
The image was taken at the end of a warm and humid full moon night shoot in Jamestown. I used a very small f stop for a night exposure and extended the exposure time to get the "flare" effect from the lights on the Pell/Newport Bridge. When I viewed the image, I was pleased to see how well the reflections on Narragansett Bay contrasted with the dark outline of the shore. The lights of Newport can be seen in the background. I cropped this image to make the reflection a more important part of the image. The previous upload showed more of the bridge and the "flared" lights.
The Aurora Over The Dredge - 2

Nikon D300s, September 23, 2010, iso 200, 10mm, f5.6, 120 seconds, 11:20PM. Dredge is illuminated by the full moon.
Recently returned from a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska to meet our new grandson and visit with our son and daughter-in-law. On the night of the full moon, Dan and I went out to the Chatanika Gold Dredge #3 which is located about 30 miles north of Fairbanks for a night shoot. The chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis that evening was low. We were pleasantly suprised when it appeared and we had an fantastic evening shooting and watching in amazement the Aurora. The temperature was 32 degrees F. We continued to shoot until sometime after 1AM. I reached a point that I decided to put my camera away, while Dan continued to shoot, and just stand there and enjoy the 360 degree show that the Aurora was putting on above our heads. It was something that I may never get to see again.

The Aurora Over The Dredge - 1

Nikon D300s, September 23, 2010, iso 200, 10mm, f5.6, 120 seconds, 11:07PM.
