Vernal Falls

Rob Kroenert posted a photo:

Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park, California, seen from the Mist Trail. This is probably a little more scenic than the last waterfall photo I posted.

April is a great time to visit Yosemite. Nice weather, waterfalls going full force, relatively light crowds. I drove up Saturday morning, hiked to Vernal and Nevada Falls on Saturday afternoon, camped in the valley Saturday night, hiked up Four Mile Trail on Sunday morning until I hit too much snow, then drove back to San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.

Shockingly, I didn’t wipe out once on those hikes. Here’s the full report: 0 ankle rolls (a new personal record), 2 awkward slips, 1 near wipeout, and 0 full wipeouts (which is very unusual).

This was my first time experimenting with the Hoya ND-400 X filter at Yosemite. It darkens the view by 9 stops so you can lengthen the exposure enough to blur moving water or clouds, even in direct sunlight. And I manually blended two exposures for this image – one for the white of the waterfall and a second for everything else.
