Heading over to this spot on Yerba Buena island for a shot of the Bay Bridge framing the San Francisco skyline has become a holiday tradition for me. This is a 244-second exposure, taken just after sunset on the night before New Year's Eve.

Here's another shot of Istanbul's Sultan Ahmed Mosque (more commonly called the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles on its interior walls), taken before dawn from the roof of the Seven Hills Hotel. The mosque was built in the early 1600s and is still actively used today as a place of worship.

This is the interior of Istanbul's Hagia Sophia (aka the Aya Sofia), a church-turned-mosque originally built by the Roman Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.

Here's a shot of the Hagia Sophia (also called the Aya Sofia), taken just before sunrise from the roof of the Seven Hills Hotel in Istanbul. This amazing building was constructed by the Roman Emperor Justinian in the sixth century and served as the Christian world's premiere church until 1453, when Islamic forces conquered Constantinople and had it converted into a mosque. The sense of history in and around this place is incredible.

Midtown Blue Hour

I live in San Francisco, so New York City is a long way to go for a one-hour meeting. But what a great city to visit, even just for a quick work trip.

My meeting was Monday morning, which meant I needed to fly on Sunday. I left really early with the idea of getting to the city in time for blue hour photos. My hotel was close to the Empire State Building, so after dropping off my bag I headed right up to the observation deck on the 86th floor and made it there well before sunset.

Taking low-light shots from the Empire State Building’s observation deck is a little tricky. There are big crowds to deal with, of course, but the main problem is that tripods are prohibited. I tried some high-ISO handheld shots until it got pretty dark, then I switched to a variety of MacGyver-esque balancing acts that involved resting the camera on various ledges and awkwardly propping it into position with whatever miscellaneous objects I happened to have in my pockets. Turns out you can do a lot with a lens cap, an iPod, and a paperback book.

This is the view looking north, with the Chrysler Building on the far right.

Golden Gate Bridge Line-up from CRT

Yep, I’m a sucker for a line-up. This is another shot of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Coastal Ridge Trail (more accurately, from a path that branches off the CRT and crosses over the first highway 101 tunnel on the Marin side). The parking lot in the foreground is Vista Point.

I took this towards the end of the blue hour on Monday last week. There was a low haze that evening - you can see in this photo how the tops of the bridge towers, rising out of the haze, are clearer than the lower areas.

The view from this particular spot may now be my favorite in the entire area. Better, I think, than Hawk Hill, Twin Peaks, Mt. Tam, Mt. Diablo, you name it. I'm looking forward to going back again when low fog is rolling through.

This is the approach to the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, taken from the Coastal Ridge Trail in the Marin Headlands.

I didn't get enough of this vantage point on Saturday morning so I hiked back up there after work on Monday to try some blue hour shots. And it's a pretty safe bet I'll be back again soon.

I think I've worked my way through most of the classic/cliched San Francisco scenes, but I realized I'd never shot this view of the Transamerica Pyramid from Pier 7. Thanks to all the rain we've having there was enough standing water on the boardwalk to reflect at least the very top of the pyramid.
