Heading over to this spot on Yerba Buena island for a shot of the Bay Bridge framing the San Francisco skyline has become a holiday tradition for me. This is a 244-second exposure, taken just after sunset on the night before New Year's Eve.

On the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving we had some really nice low fog rolling through the Golden Gate. This is an 80-second exposure, taken from the Marin Headlands.

What an great job they did Sunday night with the Golden Gate Bridge 75th anniversary fireworks show... I joined a line of more than 50 other photographers at Battery Spencer and really enjoyed the tribute to my favorite bridge.

In the past I've had some good luck with photo conditions on NYE, so I thought I'd head over to Yerba Buena Island on the last evening of 2011 to watch the sun set behind San Francisco. This viewpoint isn't the easiest place to access and on previous trips I'd never seen anyone else, but apparently it's become quite popular - there were four other photographers this time.

Here's my attempt to capture this morning's lunar eclipse as the moon set behind the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. I was certainly not alone - there must have been 50 other photographers out there at Crissy Field before dawn.

San Francisco Fireworks

I just heard that the KFOG Kaboom fireworks show is moving to the area around Candlestick Park this year instead of the usual spot near AT&T Park. That kinda stinks. I was looking forward to trying some more Golden Gate Bridge shots, like this one from last year’s show, or experimenting with a different view from Treasure Island.

Anyone have ideas for a good place to shoot this year’s show?

North Tower Fog at Dawn

This is the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Pretty regularly now I’ve been getting up early on the weekends to take photos in the pre-dawn light. Some mornings – like this past Saturday – I don’t end up taking a single shot. But other mornings – like this past Sunday – I’m lucky enough to catch some interesting conditions.

The fog before dawn on Sunday moved almost directly south-to-north, blanketing the south tower completely but only hitting the north tower in patches. In terms of pre-dawn light, my favorite is this very brief window – maybe 5-10 minutes – where there’s enough of a glow in the sky to add color and shape to the fog but not enough to drown out the lights of the bridge.

New Moon Lineup

Well, not quite a new moon, but pretty close. That's the north tower of the Golden Gate Bridge in front of the Bay Bridge, taken from the Marin Headlands before dawn this past Saturday.

The moon moves fast enough that it gets blurry if you use a shutter speed slower than a second or two. And for this shot I wanted enough depth of field to keep both the tower and moon in focus, which meant I needed to bump up the ISO instead of opening up the aperture. So the result is a little grainy.

I'm still adding to my collection of photos from this spot in Sausalito (which is a nice way of saying that I've beaten this particular composition into the ground). That's the San Francisco skyline, with the Bay Bridge on the left.

Sunday morning before dawn the conditions were great for this kind of shot - clouds low enough over the city to reflect the light, water by the pilings calm enough to re-reflect (is there a word for that?) the light bouncing off the clouds, and hardly any wind to disturb the tripod.
