Below Mooney Falls

Here's another photo from the Havasupai Indian Reservation on the western edge of the Grand Canyon.

I'm posting this one not because I think it turned out particularly well, but because the scene itself was incredible - soaring orange sandstone canyon walls framing four different waterfalls flowing with the unique blue-green water of Havasu Creek. The photo doesn't do it justice. I happened to be there at the wrong time of day for taking this shot, and the range of light was far too much for a single exposure to handle. The sky and the sunlit part of the canyon were extremely bright, and the unusual waterfall on the far right was really dark. HDR seemed like my only option for bringing out an image that better represented how this scene looked to the eye.

If you ever have a chance to visit Supai, definitely don't miss the hike from Mooney Falls down to Beaver Falls.

Havasu Falls Landscape

Rob Kroenert posted a photo:

Supai, Arizona has to be one of the most scenically-located towns in the U.S. It also has to be one of the most remote towns in the continental 48, given that it's eight miles away from the nearest road. Supai is so remote that the 2000 U.S. Census apparently missed counting it.

As the crow flies, Supai is just about 60 miles west of the south rim of the Grand Canyon, but the drive takes about 3-4 hours - first down to Flagstaff, then over to Seligman, and then up to a parking lot (the Hualapai Hilltop) on the rim of a canyon. From the parking lot you have three options for covering the remaining eight miles to Supai. You can ride a mule, fly in a helicopter, or hike.

Supai is the capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Havasupai means "people of the blue-green water," a name that makes perfect sense when you see the creek that flows through their canyon. The creek's beautiful turquoise color is created by a high concentration of calcium carbonate (lime), which also causes the water to mineralize whatever it touches. That process of mineralization creates unique limestone formations and - along with frequent flooding - helps ensure that the creek never looks the same from year to year.

I'd been wanting to visit this place ever since I saw a photo of Havasu Falls, one of the many waterfalls made by the Havasu Creek as it travels from Supai down to the Colorado River. It looked otherworldly too me, almost too idyllic to be real.

Marie and I finally made it there in late October, so I can now confirm that the place is, in fact, real. And just as otherworldly and idyllic as it looks in photos. This is a photo of Havasu Falls, about two miles downstream from Supai, taken just after sunrise.

Antelope Canyon October Portrait

My recent trip to the Wave provided a good excuse to make a quick stop at Antelope Canyon (just outside of Page, Arizona).

It's truly an incredible place, but the crowds make it tough to enjoy. Even on a Monday in October the narrow canyon was packed wall-to-wall with people, making it extremely difficult to set up a tripod without someone bumping into you or blocking the lens.

Sunset at Horseshoe Bend

One of the best things about my recent visit to the Wave is that it gave me a good excuse to stop by Horseshoe Bend (just south of Page, Arizona). We arrived as the sun was setting and had some incredible luck with clouds and color.

Several photographers with serious equipment were lined up next to me, and one of the guys hiked back to the parking lot about 10 minutes before this color appeared. He didn’t seem like he was in a hurry and must have just assumed that nothing interesting was going to happen. It was a good reminder that sunsets move in mysterious ways – it usually pays to stick it out until you’re absolutely sure the show is over.

This is a manual blend of two exposures, one for the sky and another for everything else.
