As I maneuvered to get the singing bird against a better background, I found this interesting composition, with the popping bud adding just the right touch. Although its beak is shut here, the ruffled throat feathers reflect this particular passage in the Rose-breasted's song, which sometimes sounds to me like "Pretty kitty fur..."

The Bushtit was building a nest, and keeping a close eye on the photographer. Along with the Verdin, this is one of N, America's smallest passerines, and similarly difficult to catch out in the open and motionless. The dark eyes indicate that this is a male.

Striking a pose worthy of Bambi, a female White-tailed deer pauses briefly at Forest Park Nature Center, near Peoria, Illinois, USA.

20 years ago, deer sightings in this area were not common, but now, there are small herds. The same is no less true of the Wild Turkey in the same area.

Falcon Fledglings Feeding

Up on Morro Rock along the coast of Central California, a male Peregrine Falcon, or tiercel, has just delivered a fresh kill for his three fledgling falcons, who quickly fly in for the feast. The tiercel's wing is just visible to the left in the background, and he is ready to depart the scene. Also noteworthy are the little tassels visible on the end of the arriving fledgling's tail feathers.

The male is/was mated to Khaos, the (female) Peregrine Falcon who has been queen of the rock for 12 years.

The hummingbird flew out and darted from spot to spot in the air, giving me the ol' 20x over. Sometimes I think birds are intrigued by the sound of my camera's shutter chattering away, other times I think it's just me.
