Pony Express Statue

StJoMo posted a photo:

The first Pony Express Statue was unveiled in St. Joseph, Missouri, on April 20, 1940, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Pony Express. The horse appears to leap ahead with the encouragement of the rider, who swings a quirt past its flank.

The bronze horse and rider, of heroic proportions, was created by Hermon A MacNeil, a famous sculptor, who carved the frescoes of many state capitals, as well as, the U. S. Supreme Court sculptures in Washington, DC.

The $16,000 Pony Express Statue in St. Joseph weighs two tons. It was part of a $63,000 Civic Center bond issue passed August 5, 1938, with bonds providing 55% of the cost, and the WPA, 45%. Postmaster General James Farley was present for the unveiling.

This monument is located on the corner of Tenth and Frederick streets.

The Patee House, a four-floor hotel, was built in 1858. It is now an area museum (open April-October, yearly). The Patee House was commanded as Union Headquarters during the Civil War--much to the chagrin of the owner, Patee, who was a Southern sympathizer. Later, it became headquarters for operation of the Pony Express.
Visitor Information

On April 3, 1860, a lone rider left on horseback from the gates of one of the nation’s most historic landmarks, the Pikes Peak Stables in St. Joseph, Missouri. Carrying saddlebags filled with our nations hopes and dreams, the riders traveled 2000 miles west to Sacramento, California. These brave young souls raced against nature’s cruel elements and rugged terrain in an attempt to unite a country separated by distance. Today the stables continue to stand as a tribute to the legend and legacy of the Pony Express and its enduring era.

Come and experience the many exciting, educational, state-of-the-art exhibits conveying the need, creation, operation and termination of the Pony Express. Whatever your age, you’re sure to be captivated by the stories and images on an era long passed.
