Here's a building I stumbled upon in Tallinn during the summer. We just don't have this kind of decrepit architecture in Sweden. And what's more it looks like a face, doesn't it? A face filled with sadness or panic or both; I can't decide which.

I found this semicircular hangar-shaped garage while meandering through Tallinn. Actually, it's located right behind the old salt storage building. The graffiti and black and white post-processing really brings out the "industrialness" of the subject.

This is "Adam and Eve" by Ellen Kolk. It's located by the Old Town Wall in Tallinn, and that's all I know. Well, I also know it's a bit disparate, the woman being sort of chubby and the man being rather muscular (and both people being pretty short). There's clearly some intimacy going on, the way he's holding her, his head leaning toward hers.

St. Olaf's Church

H Sundholm (henriksundholm.com) posted a photo:

Olaf... that sounds suspiciously Norwegan, doesn't it? Well, it is. The church is dedicated to King Olaf II of Norway (995-1030).

Of course, the church itself is not Norwegian but Estonian. It was probably constructed in the 1100s and used to be the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1625. It claimed the title when the central spire of Lincoln Cathedral collapsed, and lost it to St. Mary's church in Stralsund, when its own spire burned down due to a lightning strike. Those weather Gods sure do work in mysterious ways... It doesn't look very tall, you say? Well, in those days, the spire was 159 meters high. Today it is about 124 meters. (Which still makes it about 5 meters taller than the tallest church in Scandinavia.)

One more thing. The spire used to be a Soviet KGB surveillance point from 1944 to 1991.

Old Times and New Times

H Sundholm (henriksundholm.com) posted a photo:

I think this picture shows the contrast between old and new buildings in Tallinn.

To the left, we have the former Rotermann salt storage, a limestone building dating back to 1905. Today, it houses the Museum of Estonian Architecture ("Eesti Arhitektuurimuuseum").

And to the right, we have a modern office building, or at least I think it's an office building. As I recall, it was built in 2006 or 2007.

MS Victoria I

H Sundholm (henriksundholm.com) posted a photo:

I recently went on a cruise from Sweden to Estonia with this ship. The photo was shot in Tallinn, on my way back after having spent the day on land. That blue sign saying "Stockholm" is hard to miss, I guess. I know there are some reflections here, but if I can deal with them, hopefully so can you.

I have visited Tallinn maybe five or six times before, as well as travelled with this ship two or three times. Still some new things. Last time I was here, in September 2007, I hadn't developed my interest in photography. The town has changed a bit in those three years; they really do work around the clock to improve their standard of living. Having been occupied by the Soviet Union until 1991, they still have a lot to improve. But I'm sure they will be able to catch up within a generation or two.

Another new thing was that I went alone this time. I had never been on a cruise – let alone abroad – just by myself. It turned out to work really well!

If you're curious, the ship to the left is MS Superstar. It's on the Tallinn–Helsinki route.
A Little Street

H Sundholm (henriksundholm.com) posted a photo:

What to say about it, really? Just a little street in the older parts of Tallinn. Some ghosts, some who are still among the living. I hope the old man pointed the woman in the right direction.

On a separate topic, I've been asked why I (at least try to) upload one new photo every day. Is it because I am megalomaniac enough to imitate my own favorite photographer Trey Ratcliff? Well, no. There are several reasons. I don't have to feel any pressure about shooting and post-processing photos that way; it allows for the work to take its due time. Also, it keeps me from uploading stuff of lesser quality. It makes my stream a bit more interesting, since I avoid dumping whole series of the same subjects. It satisfies my Aspergian need for continuity. And it lets me add each photo to all my relevant groups (many of them only allows for one or two additions per day). I hope that clarified the question at issue!
