This overhead shot looking East near Market and Collingwood Streets shows the massive engineering challenge of connecting the existing Twin Peaks Tunnel to the new Muni Metro Subway system. Amazingly, streetcar service was not interrupted, as can be seen by the car moving through the excavated tunnel.

Another unique street scene captured by Muni photographer Marshall Moxom in late 1972. This photograph was part of a series taken to assess and make improvements (benches, shelters, etc.) to bus stops all over town.

This photo features an interesting and innovative alternative propulsion technology that Muni was exploring for use in Trolley Coaches. the men are holding a model of a 'Flywheel Energy Storage' system designed by Lockheed Martin (dubbed 'Kinetic Energy Wheel'). The system consists of a massive (600lbs.) flywheel connected to a combination electric motor/generator. The Coach would hook up to existing overhead wires and the flywheel would be spun up to an incredible 20,000 rpm. After this, the coach could disconnect from the wires and the spinning (kinetic energy) flywheel would then turn the generator to produce the 600 volts needed to power the electric drivetrain of the vehicle. This type of energy storage system would be far superior to batteries for energy storage and it would allow coaches to disconnect from the overhead system so that they could move more freely and avoid major route blockages more easily. Not to mention greater energy savings by having the bus store it's own energy instead of constantly drawing from the overhead system.

From a series of photos taken to document newspaper racks blocking Muni stops. This photo captures a small glimpse of Polk Street in the early 1970s. Blum's, on the right, was a San Francisco Bakery/Deli/Candy Shop that purportedly had an excellent Coffee Crunch Cake. The building here has been completely demolished and replaced with a larger shopping center style, multi-business building.

This photo features another investigation Muni made into providing cleaner, quieter transportation service through the use of alternative propulsion technology. This bus (a regular GMC Motor Coach) is outfitted with a steam turbine 'engine' designed by Bill Lear to replace diesel engines. The 'Vapor Turbine' uses superheated steam expelled at high pressure (600 psi) to spin a turbine at 40,000-60,000 rpm. The turbine was connected both to the transmission (to drive the wheels) and to gearboxes used to power auxiliary equipment (cooling, alternator, etc.). While the turbine would have consumed more fuel, it produced cleaner emissions (vs. gas or diesel), could be run on a variety of different fuels (allowing Muni to use cheaper fuels), produced more power, and was significantly quieter than diesel engines (reducing noise pollution).

This overhead shot gives a great view of the Duboce and Market area looking East from Church St. This construction provided an exit point for the N from the Muni Metro subway being built under Market Street. Prior to the Muni Metro construction, Duboce Ave. was a through street for auto and surface streetcar traffic.

Taken to show the layout of the overhead wires for the trolley coach terminal at the Ferry Building, this photo also captures the now demolished Embarcadero Skyway as it stood for decades. A nice glimpse into San Francisco's not too distant past!
