The Devaraja Market (approx 120 yrs old) in Mysore is a great place to get a flavor of the local people's daily life. This is a good sample of a traditional Indian market place that is colorful, noisy, vibrant and a bit chaotic.
You will find a great mix of incense shops,seeds,souvenir stalls, vegetables,spices and beautiful flowers and much more, the fragrances of the flowers and spices is a delight and to watch the garland makers and incense makers is an artistic affair on it's own. The entrance of this market facing the Dufferin Clock Tower is floaded with truckloads of bananas, mangos and sugar cane. There is no cold storage here and everything is raw and straight from the farm to the market to the homes. Discounts start at closing hour.

Flattening the rice

A tractor is used to flatten the rice, it drives at high speed over the piles of rice, while workers keep sorting it out on throwing it back on the pile, looking over their shoulders for the tractor!

Madikeri, in Coorg, is a hill station in Karnataka state, it is the headquarter of Kodagu district and a popular tourist destination.
It's a must to stay in one of the many coffee-spice (rice)-plantations, the air is cool and the fragrances of coffee and various spices like cardamon,cinnamon and nutmug is a true delight.

The Coracle

The coracle is a small, lightweight boat, oval in shape and very simular to a half walnett shell, the strucure is made of framework of split and interwoven willow rods, tied with willow bark.
The outerlayer was originally an animal skin such as horse or bullock, with a thin layer of tar to make it fully waterproof- today tar is replaced by canvas or fibreglass.
They are an effective fishing vessel because, when powered by a skilled man, they hardly disturb the water or the fish and they easliy manoevred with one arm, while the other arm tends the net.

The Kayan are an ethnic minority of Burma (Myanmar). The Kayan Lahwi is the group whose women identify themselves by wearing large neck rings, brass coils that are placed around the neck.
Girls first start to wear rings when they are around five years old. Over the years the coil is replaced by a longer one and more turns are added. (some can weigh around 5 kg).

The Kayan live in the hills in Northern Thailand in the provence of Mae Hong Son. In the late 1980's due to a conflict with the military regime in Burma, many Kayan tribes fled to the Thai border. Among the refugee camps set up there was a Long neck section, which became a tourist site, self-sufficient on tourist revenue and not needing financial assistance.
