This photo was taken just a few weeks after the shortest day of the year, so the sun was setting a lot farther south than it does during the summer months. Combine that with a slightly overcast day and you get a spectacular sunset just above the famous neon-clad hotels along Ocean Drive.

I was surprised to see palm trees in Vancouver the first time I visited in 2000. Turns out, it's actually quite mild in this part of the world. Hard to believe a world-class ski resort is just a couple hours a way...

Laguna Beach, CA

Laguna is such a beautiful town, but unless you own one of the multi-million dollar homes that cling to the cliffs, panoramic views of the coast are few and far between. I stumbled across this location while driving on some way-off-the-beaten-path roads through the hills above town (I actually think this was more of an access road to some electrical equipment). Regardless, it provides a view of town rarely seen by anyone other than the locals.

After a short hike through the jungle, we were rewarded with a nearly deserted beach. Tunnels Beach, on the North Shore of Kauai, is reknowned for its spectacular scenery, great snorkeling (you can see the reefs just beyond the beach) and lack of crowds... Fine by me.

My daughter couldn't contain herself, so she sprinted ahead of us. You can see her in the bottom right of the photo.
