We had a great day at Butchart Gardens on Sunday. Verity is now taking more of an interest in the beautiful surroundings.

If you view large, which I hope you will do to see the detail in the style, you will see a tiny spider web strand...

Light HDR and tonemapping to compensate for a dull overcast noon light. They are far more beautiful in person.

Duskweb

ecstaticist posted a photo:

please check out large | My top 100

Please take a moment and look closely. I have posted 1289 droplet refraction shots, but this one is unique among them. It is a side-lit spiderweb with dew, and in each drop is a refraction of a dim horizon at dusk.

I think the lighting is rather unusual, and the refraction looks eerie. It is just trees and sky, but it turned out ok. The web was strung in the opening of a gate outside a winery. I stopped to shoot the winery but then got distracted by the drops, something that has never happened to me before ;-)

I did the lighting by blocking the direct flash and letting the light bounce off the white fence surrounding the web out of frame.

I deviated from my typical square today because there was a lot I liked in this 4:3 and could not find a crop. Why do I almost always go square? I dunno. Ask Chris.
Hope this looks ok. I can't really see it properly on my 3.5 yr old MacBook Pro with the faded screen.

I've worked in and/or around this building for sixteen years. This is the seat of the provincial Legislature of my home Canadian province, British Columbia. It is known by those of us who toil here as "The Rockpile". It is a stone building designed by famous architect Sir Francis Rattenbury.

It was a very stormy day today, broken by periods of amazing light. My daughter and I were in the neighborhood visiting the Royal British Columbia Museum, which is where I captured this three exposure HDR from the third floor.

Leaving Vancouver for Cortez Island tomorrow. I have never been there. So many people I respect speak highly of the Hollyhock Institute. We'll see what it means for me. At the very least I should get some interesting photos of a gorgeous part of the world.

Fellow Vancouverites if you would be so kind as to help out with notes on landmarks, much appreciated.

Very clear day yesterday and the helicopter ride yielded some really clear shots. I upped the shutter speed on these to 640/sec to make sure I didn't get any motion blur.

Sunset Rock Vertorama

www.twitter.com/ecstaticist/ <-- I tweet when I post on flickr.

view larger... | original | My top 100

This was not easy because of the exposure difference between the upper and lower parts of the shot. I did two HDR images, balanced the exposures by eye, converted them to TIFFs and then ran the stitch in Photoshop.

See the ghost bird? It flew in on one of the upper frame exposures.

Directly above the rock is huge Celebrity Cruise ship that had just pulled out of Victoria harbor about 30 minutes previous. The 28mm wide on the G10 makes things small in the distance.

This is the thing about HDR. It gives you a better chance to convey a moment the way you enjoyed it with your eyes, adjusting exposure on the many parts of a scene, taking it all in. It is just photographic technology, not the "bastardization" some camera purists make it out to be. These same purists might be shocked to learn some of the darkroom tricks of their heroes. Photography does not end the moment the light hits film or sensor. At least, not for ME it doesn't ;-)
