The Bridge and the Heron

This "gray heron" (that also seems to be the actual common name for this one) was waiting in there for a while doing I don't know what. I thought it just liked the camera attention.

But then it started catching little fish that were coming down the stream.

So there you have it. This bird knows a thing or two about good dinner spots.

Taken yesterday from the top of the Daimonji mountain, probably the most well-known of all the six mountains used during the Gozan no Okuribi festival in which bonfires are lit to make shapes of kanjis and other figures.

The counterpart of the Daimonji, the Hidari Daimonji can slightly be seen on this photo.

Pelecanus conspicillatus flying over the Noosa River delta at 40k/h... in a show of elegant prowess during the operation.
Not to mention freakin' awesome looking too as it was keeping that height to the water all the way throughout the river, like an automated strike drone in disguise, ready to unleash hell upon unaware targets.

More precisely, the photo was taken on the Thai side of the Mekong River, overlooking the Laotian shore (which can bee seen in the photo), and the monk was looking towards the Burmese side.

Found them nearby the Mekong river playing around an old tractor and they liked the camera attention on them.

A couple of them shied away in the beginning but in the end they got used to the big scary camera following them. A couple more, especially the girl in the far right, were simply born to be superstars and instantly started to do funny faces for me as you will see later on.

Well... not exactly, but that's the very first thing that came to my head as I was watching this Land Rover cruising through a strip of sand in the delta of the Noosa river.

Which by the way I must confess made me a little envious about the lucky bloke behind the steering wheel of a 4WD "actually" using the 4WD function for real... probably while listening to some cool road tunes ...and some cute chick next to him... dammit!

However! This weekend I get to be the lucky bloke since we're going to this island North of Brisbane called Fraser Island which apparently is the largest sand island in the world or something. Just by hearing some of the names of parts of the island, like the "75 mile beach", you can tell it sounds promising!

Some seven years ago I had the chance to be a university student for one year in Kyoto, and trust me, once you have checked up on your list a good deal of all of the Old Capital's specialties like temples, shrines, festivals, food, maikos, castles, streets, and they all start to be a part of your everyday life, then... you start wondering yourself about:

My answer still is: WILDLIFE

You wouldn't believe all the species of crazy animals roaming around Japan's most beautiful city: eagles, falcons, rabbits, carps, fancy cats and dogs, turtles, reptiles, snakes, yakuzas, rodents... you name it! Kyoto has them all!

No big story here people, as you can see that's just a simple hanging bridge... a red one, on a river...

alright, alright, I'll tell you!...but remember you didn't hear it from me!...

...that bridge is the only access to a secret biotechnology research center the Japanese Government built on that small island in Wakayama Prefecture.
That hidden center has spawned many experiments that later on went on to become popular culture celebrities:

+Godzilla itself was born there fifty years ago, they never really found any practical purpose for him, but some guy from the Toho Film Company paid peanuts for its copyright and... you know the rest.

+After serving in WWII, a doctor from Osaka called Osamu Tezuka worked in there for a while as the head physician. He got many interesting ideas from everything he saw inside, specially the early computers they used. Those ideas would later evolve to become popular characters and stories such as Astro Boy (Atom), Black Jack, Big X, Kimba - the white lion, etc

+A couple decades ago yet another doctor from Harvard Medical School paid a visit and later on he wrote a novel about some secret island in the South Pacific where dinosaurs were brought back to life by using cloning technology. Eventually Steven Spielberg read that book and the rest is history...

The river is also very useful, it keeps the humans out and the zombies in... as you know, zombies can't stand water.
