Papua New Guinea Hulis Wigmen

The men-with-wigs are the members of the Huli tribe. It is the most famous famous tribe of Papua New Guinea. They are called like that because they make wigs from their hair. They live close to Tari city in the center of the Papua New Guinea on the top of the Highlands. Most of the hulis are civilized but a part of them still lives a traditional life. For their singsings (the local names for the big events) the men come back to their indigenous customs. For these occasions, even the city of Tari is suddenly filled with aborigines dressed in short skirts and traditional wigs richly decorated with feathers. They paint their faces, usually with yellow, red, and white decorations like you can see on the picture.
Hulis are warriors.At the beginning of the year 2010, the tribal fights even start to bother the economical development. Police was deployed the Southern Highlands province to contain an ongoing tribal war which has troubled the ExxonMobil gas pipeline project. The operations of were badly affected by the fights which started in jaunary 2010. The fights caused 11 deaths and the destruction of more than 270 houses.

Suli Muli tribe woman, from Enga. They wear some giant hat made of moss and fresh herbs. So the hat will be used just one ceremony, and they will disappear...The men wear the same kind of hat, but made with their own hair, like the Huli tribe warriors.
They perform different dances, where they all sing "suli muli", which has became also the name of the tribe.
They perform a dance, banging on drums, jumping, and singing, where they move all together, like a roman turtle.

(enlarge please) Imagine how many plumes are needed to made this giant hat!...and how many time it take to create it, as at every ceremony (Singsing), the people re-build it...Each plume is packed in paper to avoid the insects...The big white thing in the belly is a shell.

"Mud man" hand Papua New Guinea

The Asaro Mudmen come from just outside the town of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. The mud men covered their bodies with mud and become white. White colour represents death in the Papouasian culture. On the fingers, they put bamboos sticks to make noise and frighten the ennemies. First people who watched mud men fled, terrified. Then it became a big attarction in the local festivals.The only original mud-man remaining is Mister Ruipo Okoro. He accuses some young men of other ethnical groups who are not descendents of the true ancestors to use the mud men ritual as an entertainment for tourists to make money.
