Lamu is a small town on Lamu Island, in kenya, near the Somalia border.
Lamu town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it was one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa.
The town's history is marked by a Portuguese invasion then the Omani domination, like in Zanzibar. The streets of Lamu are very narrow, so there are no cars, only donkeys to carry everything!

When war and paradise clashes...
Formerly a British colony, Somaliland briefly reached its independence in 1960. It is one of the three Territories, with Puntland and former Italian Somalia that compose the current State of Somalia.
Somaliland proclaimed its independence in 1991, adopting its own currency, a fully independent government, working institutions and police. The authorities organized a referendum in 2001, advocating once again for full independence. However, to date, it is not internationally recognized.
Ethiopian Prime minister Meles Zenawi is the only one to speak about a Somalilander president, recognizing implicitly the existence of an independent State. Indeed the economy of neighboring Ethiopia dramatically depends on Somaliland stability, since the landlocked country’s main trade route passes through the Somalilander port of Berbera… And vice-versa, the economy of Somaliland largely depends on the taxes and duties it charges Ethiopia. Besides that, the principal economic activity of Somaliland is livestock exportation to the Arabian Peninsula. Most people are Sunni Muslims and speak Arabic, as well as some Somali dialect and many of them, English.Lastely, the East African demography being based on clan alliances, it is no surprise that the frontiers drawn by the colonists don’t match the ethnic divisions of territory, leading to open clashes. More broadly, this problem is recurrent across the African continent.

On the east side, the Chilbo sea beaches are really fantastic. You cannot access the sea everywhere as many parts are closed with barb wires.. Japan is not far!

Since time immemorial, Oman has been a seafaring nation. In fact, as far back as the 8th century, an Omani vessel reached Canton in China.
The traditional dhew, also popularly known as Al Boum, Al Ghanjah, Shu'i, Al Badan, etc. which were used in trading, weathered stormed to reach ports in Iran, India, South-East Asia and further down the African coast in Zanzibar.
Even today, the tradional dhew dots Oman's coasline, along with Fulk Esalamah, Zenat Al Behar and Sohar.

Masira which is located in the Arabian Sea was a rest station for ships anchored off its shores, to get sweet water. Alexander the Great made it his base and called it Serepsis.

Perhaps the nicest meeting i had in North Korea during my september 2011 trip: we stopped along the beach in Chilbo coast (a very nice place, full of trees and white beaches). I saw a group of north koreans kids playing in the beach. i wanted to meet them, but a big STOP billboard was in the middle of the beach. Meaning "foreigner, get tout of here". But as soon as they saw me, the kids all came, and explained me in a rather good english that they were the North Korea judo team, and had holidays in Chilbo sea. Then a policeman came , and ask everybody to go back on each side of the STOP billboard...
One more time it is possible to speak to north koreans, if you do not obey your guide, and if you treat them like normal human beings!

Somailand has hundreds of kilometers of empty beaches! Until now, no pirates have caused problems there.
The only problem is the pollution: tons of plastic bags (coming from the qat chewers) and plastic bottles...

Berbera may be the next big port of the Red Sea in few years as it will be connected to South Sudan and Ethiopia. An old town is still existing, looking like Massawa.
