Pretty sure these things (don't know the architectural term) weren't designed by Frankie, since it wasn't called the First National Bank when he designed the building. But they do look FLWish and fit into the angles and lines of the building from this angle.
Stowe / Died October 11, 1860 / Aged 33 yrs. 7 Ms." />

Near Oakfield, Wisconsin
May 2, 2012

Kate's interest in genealogy has taken us to a few cemeteries where I've developed a lighting method to better photograph tombstones. I won't claim to have come up with the idea; in fact I may have gotten it from somewhere I can't remember. Anyway, it works pretty well at bringing out text in old, weathered markers that are all but unreadable. And it seems to be more effective then doing rubbings. So I'll pass on the method.

Hold a flash unit (in my case, Nikon Speedlights - either SB800 or SB600) at a hard, raking angle to the monument. You can see the placement in the pictures. You'll also need to shade the gravestone from any other light, which will only interfere with the light coming from the flash. You'll notice in one of these photos that I'm casting a shadow on the stone. This was intentional.

In "flash-speak", suppressing the ambient would work too, but this was a spectacularly sunny day. Artificial shade was satisfactory.

The raking light from the flash brings out the text in the headstones pretty nicely. However, it isn't perfect. In one of the pictures you'll notice that the name is "Stowe." Frankly, I would never have gotten that out of the image, but my wife knows it's "Stowe" and, if I use my imagination, yeah ... OK.

In all cases in these shots, the flash was on a wire from my D90 hotshoe and was held camera left by my lovely VAL.

If you time your visit right, and don't have an off-camera flash, the sun can do the job for you, particularly late in the day. At one cemetery, we were there in late afternoon and some of the monuments aligned nicely with the sun and the same effect was achieved.

I posted high resolution shots
