The northern lights made a brief show over Devil Track Lake. Minnesota.

We had a brief aurora surprise in Minnesota tonight. Here's one picture. It was cold out there at 0F when I was shooting, but worth it.

Northern Lights Over Northern Lights Lake

Northern lights fill the sky over Northern Lights Lake just outside of Grand Marais, MN.

Even with the moon out, tonight's northern lights display lit up the sky. We watched it for hours and hours. It was the brightest for about 30 minutes during which I took this photo. At points, the lights pulsed directly above our heads. I spent the time taking pictures and my two companions sat on the ground and looked up. Fog drifted over the lake. When we left there was still a good display going on.

This was the best display of northern lights in a long time. Wow!

Northern Lights over Northern Lights Lake

On March 10, 2011, a coronal mass ejection hit Earth and sparked northern lights that reached as far south as Madison, Wis. Here the northern lights dance over Northern Lights Lake. Grand Marais, MN. (110311-120)

This was a really cool event. About 11pm, I looked outside and the northern lights were so bright that I could see them in Grand Marais -- not the brightest I've seen in town but pretty good. I woke up my partner and made her come and look before I left to drive further north to one of my standard northern lights locations. It wasn't that good there, so I went further north and arrived just as they burst into massive action. Rays, curtains and pulses filled the sky. At points, the northern lights were directly overhead. I was actually shouting out loud in joy (but also to keep the wolves away :) ). After they died down, I drove further up the Gunflint Trail to Bearskin Lake and saw a moose in the road. Plus, three massive shooting stars. Great night!

Northern Lights Time-Lapse

This is a time-lapse film made from the images that I used to make Star Trails and Northern Lights. It's rather short, because I only had 27 photos and I used a 4 frame per second rate to keep it somewhat smooth. This shows about 13 minutes of real time in a few seconds.

I love how the northern lights move across the sky. Next time, I think, I'll let it run for about an hour.

Star Trails and Northern Lights

Star trails and northern lights over Elbow Lake, MN.

To create the image I used a full-frame fisheye and shot 27 30-second exposures. I stacked the exposures using LR/Enfuse. Taken just after midnight on August 4th.

This image was picked by Yahoo! Editorial for the Northern Lights Move South gallery, which appeared on yahoo's front page August 5th. Featured on Minnesota Public Radio's MN Today. Used on the Duluth's KDLH 3 News at Ten. Made WTIP's Photos from the Edge. Shown on CNET.com.

A Slice of Aurora

Cloud cover allows a slice of northern lights to shine over Devil Track Lake. Minnesota.

Tonight's display was awesome. Lots of action, but clouds moved in at about 1am and left just a sliver of sky open. I shot this and a few others using just the reflections and the slice of northern lights. Although I have pictures of curtains, rays, etc... I like this one the best, because it's just something different than other northern lights pictures.
