Tamaracks (Pinaceae larix laricina)

A small growth of Tamaracks which are deciduous conifers in the pine family, they actually loose their flat needle shaped leaves in late fall and they turn a beautiful golden yellow in autumn and fall. They will grow to 80 feet tall and with a 1 1/2 feet in diameter trunk.
The weather today was amazing with +10℃ and mostly sunny... Perfect for a drive out in the Caledon Hills..

There were a few of these in a large Maple tree on the Forks Of THe Credit Provincial Park yesterday along with the previous post of Eastern Bluebirds and the next post of Eastern Phoebes.

Also known as a Common Yellow Swallowtail.
There are lots of them around this year but I never chase them because they are too flighty never stopping for more than a few seconds. So I was very surprised when this one stayed put for a long time and let me get to within a foot or so. As though it needed a quick nap, but it soon flew away.

This butterfly hibernates under tree bark or any other shelters where it will be protected from the wind and birds, it spends the winter locally and emerges very early in the spring.
There were several chasing each other amorously in the forest a few days ago.
