The water level was higher than i wanted this afternoon. There are some great rocks along the shore at low tide. This small rock feature still did well as a foreground subject. A pretty nice model. if you ask me.
One of my first shots as the sun was starting to set over the Severn River as I met up with my friends at Naptown Photo.

A last minute decision to join my Naptown compadres at Jonas Green Park for a pretty awesome sunset. My 5D is having a few issues, none that I cannot correct, and as my cleaning kit has not yet arrived. my 7D went to work instead......and my trusty Tokina 11-16 was pressed into service. It still works like a charm. This is a 30 second exposure with 4 filters stacked. A screw on 3 stop ND, Singh Ray Daryl Benson RGND, Lee Coral Strip and a Lee 3 stop GND.

A single oak on the front lawn of the old McCormick House on Parson Island, once owned by McCormick Spice. Being away from the daily grind and being sequestered, I knew that a sunset was in order. I scouted a few locations, and this was my second choice, as the winds interfered with my first choice. I was hoping for a better sunset, but this turned out okay..
..and this is the same tree that was the subject in one of my light painting captures.

Another late night light painting on Parson's Island. Hey, the only way to get on or off this island is by boat, and that boat sailed back to the mainland. What else are ya gonna do? Sleep....not me!

Stacked

I wanted to take a super long exposure of this, because the dramatic sky would have added even more drama to this weathered barn. I reached into my filter pouch to pull out the Big Stopper, but something didn't feel quite right. The pouch that the Big Stopper was in felat mushy, not rigid like it normally is. My heart sank, as I immediately knew. Several weeks ago, i discovered a small crack on one of its corners, so I ordered a replacement the same day. I was hoping that the Big Stopper would last just a little longer, at least until the replacement arrived.....
So, I stacked three GNDs and set my ISO to 50 to squeeze out an extra second of exposure. Not what I had in mind, but it worked out okay, I guess.
This brings me to a question.....The Big Stopper is constantly on back order, so hasn't Lee figured out by now that they need to ramp up production?

Almost midnight and the thunderstorm starts its slow roll over the Chesapeake. If you look very carefully, you will see one thunderbolt.
A little light painting on this oak on Parson's Island. A 30 sec exposure and a very powerful LED flashlight to light the tree.
A fun shot to create, but my legs are hating me, as the skeeters had a field day.

This is a re-edit, based on a suggestion from my buddy Pete, a phenomenal portrait artist.

I hate to post and run, but I just returned to civilization from a private island in the Chesapeake. I forgot to bring my charger for the iPhone, and was disconnected from the world for 24 hours. Now, I am off again and won't be back until tomorrow. I just had to get my net fix in. I'll catch up with you all manana.....ciao

Freddie is a local singer/songwriter and a friend of Andrew Murdock, a local photographer, who I met through Facebook/Maryland Beauty. A 3 shot pano of North Beach, highlighting the newly constructed breakwater. Personally, I love how this shows the calming effect of the breakwater. A windy and slightly stormy morning aided in the rough surf and clouds.

been there, done that, just can't resist another pier comp

Ubiquitous....overshot...but still worth doing over and over again. This time, I actually lined up the end of the pier with the horizon, woohoo! And I just realized that the moon was also in the comp, double bonus. Colors courtesy of Lee coral strip, Singh Ray RGND (reverse gradient) and Lee 0.6 gradient (upside down). Yeah, me and filters at the butt crack of dawn.

'twas a cool and windy day here on the Chesapeake. So much so, that Reggie and I called it quits much earlier than we normally do. I hung around the North Beach area a bit longer than Reggie, but did dig out my shooter's gloves to keep my fingers warm. I decided to take the long way home and happened to spot this jetty. Private property, wouldn't you know....
I played by the rules earlier this morning, so I decided to continue playing by the rules. I marched myself right on up to the management office and asked for permission....oh my, me, yes.
The froth alongside the jetty and the flag are dead giveaways to the strength of the wind. Glad I had my gloves on. This is a looong exposure aided by the Lee Big Stopper and a Lee 0.9 GND . And black and white made perfect sense, since there was very little color left.

The clock at the North Beach Pier. This is the first time that I composed a shot with this clock in the frame. Perhaps, the frustration of not being able to get on the beach, legally, aided in my choice of framing? All of the gates leading to the beach(es) were locked, and there was no attendant in sight to ask permission, unlike the previous times that I have visited here. Jump the fence, or not....hmmm.....yup, I actually followed the rules today! Whatever posessed me?

It was a cold and blustery morning, and the colors were not so great, as the marine layer was a bit too thick for the sun to break through. Funny thing is, the weather forecast at 11pm last night said mostly clear! My learning's from the forecasts....when it calls for clear, it will be cloudy....and when it calls for cloudy, it will be clear! It still turned out to be a great morning, as it always is when I shoot with my buddy, Reggie. If you haven't already, you really should check out his work, as he continually inspires me.

Like a bee to pollen, I am attracted to prohibited areas. When I saw these boulders, I knew that I needed to get the shot, and I knew that it would be a black and white. The tide was low and since I had my waterproof boots on, off I went. Most of you know by now that I am drawn to places like these.

Sad to say, but this will be my last trip to Black Hill Regional Park for some time to come. Today was my last day working in Gaithersburg. I am starting a new leadership position in Burtonsville starting Monday.
The clouds, though not perfect, did cooperate today, giving me a nice send off. Black Hill, I will miss you.

We still have a long way to go to reach equality in this country of ours. Take what you may from this shot. See it as light and dark blending together, see it as light and dark struggling for dominance, see it for how it makes you feel.

When I spotted this scene, the first thing that popped into my head was the juxtaposition of light and shadow defining our everday existence. Of how we, as a society, believe that we have attained equality, and how far we truly are from it. Race, religion, social status, wealth. I am no activist, far from it, actually. Something just sparked an inner flame on this Sunday morning, and I had to get this on 'film'

A wasted morning......partly cloudy, sure...whatever.
Annapolis was a dud, Davidsonville was a dud, and so was DC. A terrible stretch of flat, lifeless sunrises these past few weeks.
If it wasn't for the Naptown meetup in DC, I would have slept in this morning.

A cherry tree with blossoms, where others were bare, commanding the attention of many. An IR rendition. I find this interesting and comical in a way. Cell phones, iPads, slrs, name it, it is being used. At least all but one is shooting away from the sun.
