Woodcut Oaks (Yosemite)

I was fortunate enough to visit Yosemite Valley last November when a winter storm moved through the valley. The black oaks that grace the meadows there were at peak fall color (and brighter and more colorful than I'd seen them in years past), and with the dusting of snow they reminded me so much of a woodcut print. With that in mind, I thought this one was a great candidate for B&W conversion.

Yosemite Falls (with seasonal flooding on the Merced River)

Bumping this because it was just published in the current (April 2013) issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine; it's one of the images in the feature on national parks. :)

Yosemite Valley is lush and green--and a little flooded right now (notwithstanding the snow that fell yesterday in the valley). With the record snowpack this winter, the mighty Merced has swollen beyond its banks, with water water everywhere. The river is wider than I've ever seen it, which in this case made for beautiful reflections. I rarely shoot this location (because just about everybody else does), but it was just too pretty to pass up on Saturday.

I am endlessly fascinated with and in awe of the climbers on El Capitan. Whenever I'm in the valley during climbing season, I always scan the face of El Cap with my long lens just to take a look at who's up there. These climbers stood out pretty clearly in their portaledges, and I'm still not over my amazement that they can just hang there thousands of feet off the ground (and still be able to sleep!).

A few days ago, I posted a sunrise pic from this spot. To give you some idea just how incredible the conditions in the valley were last Saturday--this is the first time I've ever gotten both a killer sunrise AND sunset from this spot. I love shooting here in winter, because the angle of the setting sun lights up the western side of El Capitan dramatically--and the glow was on full-blast on this evening.

Another shot from this weekend in Yosemite when an early winter storm moved through. One of the things I really loved was the look of snow on peak fall color--the colors still showed through the snow, but everything took on soft, muted tones.

Snow and Clinging Mist, Yosemite Valley

The valley was so beautiful on Saturday as the last of the early winter storm moved through; the sky would clear a bit, with mist rising and clinging to the granite, then more clouds would move in and soften the light, then clearing, then clouds--repeated all day long. It's easily the most beautiful day I've experienced in Yosemite.

Winter Storm Sunrise, Gates of the Valley (Yosemite)

I drove up to Yosemite this weekend, hoping to find nice shooting conditions from an early winter storm that moved through Friday into Saturday. This was my first shot of the day (and I generally don't think of this spot as a sunrise spot, but it certainly can be in the right light). The whole day was extraordinary, with snow, dramatic skies, and peak fall color combining into one of the most beautiful days I've ever experienced.

I don't think I've ever been in a place where conditions were good for shooting every minute of daylight--but that's what yesterday was like, and I tried to (and hopefully did) make the most of it.

Tension and Chaos, Cascade Creek (Yosemite National Park)

Robin Black Photography posted a photo:

This spot along Highway 120 as it ascends away from the valley is a favorite with many photographers, myself included. To the north of the road, the creek drops down the almost vertical wall of the Merced River Canyon in a beautiful series of drops that goes on so extensively that it's almost impossible to capture the entire thing even in multiple exposures.

On the south side of the road, the precipitous drop continues with the cascade crashing into Tamarack Creek, creating a beautiful and violent confluence. Charles Cramer and Alan Ross, among others, have famously shot the spot, and this image of mine is somewhat similar (though a much tighter crop to isolate the boulder and two saplings). After shooting it many times in different seasons, I finally realized what part of the appeal of this spot is for me: those colliding streams make some of the most beautiful water patterns, and every exposure turns out a little differently, like a fingerprint from a moment in time.

This is from spring 2011, as a near-record snowfall had begun to melt, swelling all the creeks and rivers that run from the sierra. Cascade Creek was as flooded and turbulent as I've ever seen it, and it provided this glimpse into the chaos that happens every spring.

It was so dark outside when I took this long-exposure post-sunset shot of Half Dome that I could barely see my hand in front of my face. Because of its towering height, Half Dome reflects the very last of fading light long after darkness has fallen on the rest of the valley.
