Iona and Fionnphort are where the seafood catches are landed - and usually, packed straight into crates and onto lorries to be whisked away to Spain, where their appetite for mariscos de escocia is apparently unbounded.

On the road out to the Mhachair, there's a house with a little honesty box fixed onto the front gate, where you can buy little pots of Iona honey for a pound each. Every time I go up I make a little pilgrimage of my own to buy some honey for friends or family - or sometimes myself. The honey is naturally sweet and tastes like heather. Gorgeous.

Once a year, the Tibetan bazaar rolls onto the island and spreads its wares around the village hall.

Once a year, the islanders' wardrobes are suddenly brightened by a rash of colourful cotton garments, fair trade jumpers, yak fleeces and silly hats.
