Into The Night

Hm. I just saw that it's almost two months since my last upload..
Interesting fact..
Anyway..

I must admit that in the past few months I don't have so much free time, in fact I don't have any free time at all, so when I am given the slightest opportunity to go out to take pictures, I immediately "grab the chance" and try to do my best in the little time I have in my disposal.

My family and I went to Epirus for Easter holidays and what best for some night shots in the mountain, as light pollution is at minimum in this place. So one night, when my wife and my daughter went to sleep, I had some little time to take some shots at night.

It was also a very good opportunity to test my new "nightscape" lens, the Samyang 14mm, and I must say that I'm very impressed from it's perfomance, given the fact that it's price is very low (~350€).

I used Star Walk app on my Ipod to check what time would the Milky Way rise on the night sky and headed out in the forest to find a good composition.
The light on the trees on the right came from an off-camera SB-700 flash set on manual.
I kept the exposure at 20 seconds, which is a star-trail-free setting, and I used ISO 5000 which seems to be a sweet spot for my D800.

Anyway, I'm happy for this shot but I clearly wanted more time just to "see" the whole Milky Way in my composition, but hey, first of all I'm a parent and I had to be back to my family...

Next time maybe..

The famous carnival of Patras has ended for the year 2013 and the best way to celebrate this is with fireworks !

I went to a higher ground along with my good friend Sotiris (www.flickr.com/photos/sotiris_k/ ) to view the fireworks from a higher perspective and in the end we had some great keeper-shots in our camera !

The Lake Of The Dragons - A Panoramic View

Drakolimni (Greek: Δρακολίμνη, Dragon lake) is a sub-alpine lake located in Mt. Tymfi, Greece at an altitude of nearly 2100 meters.
According to local folktales the lake used to be inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thus created the peculiar landscape and gave their name to the lake.
In reality, the name Dragonlake comes from a species of alpine newt, which the lake is inhabited by, and the newts' resemblance to small dragons gives the lake its distinctive name.

This massive panorama (the original file has an image size of 15.201 x 6602 = 100.4mp !) was created by thirteen (13) portrait orientated photos taken with my D800.
For uploading reasons, I resized it to 7600 x 3301.

Some Words..

That August afternoon I was out to shoot some seascapes during sunset.
I had heard the weather forecast the night before and I was expecting a lot of clouds and maybe some rain (I also had in mind the probability of a storm) but to be honest, I hadn't imagined something like this !
Anyway, I drove to a nearby beach just after 18.00 (local time) and took a place down to the sand, having my tripod in front of me with my camera on it.
And very soon the weather went crazy. The strong wind bring closer some menacing clouds and the thunderstorm party began, with me watching breathless in the front seat !
Wow ! Just wow ! It was an amazing experience !

Technique

Damn, I hate saying it, but for this type of shooting, I always shoot Raw...
Nikon D800 has an amazing dynamic range and when you shoot raw, you simply get the best out of it..
So, to continue, I didn't use any special gadget to catch the lightning. It was all about timing.
I found a nice looking scene, set the White balance to cloudy to warm things up and started to “count”..
You see, I had to count the time between lightnings to find what was the "interval" and when I found it, it was just a matter of time to catch a lightning with my camera.

Zissis In Action

This time something different.

A few days ago, my buddy Zissis (photographer, director, dp) invited me to the shooting of the video clip he would make for a hip hop band and asked me if I could shoot some backstage stills of the production.
I really enjoyed it that day and I can say that I captured some nice photos at the end.
And one of them is showing him in action !

The Rio–Antirrio bridge (Greek: Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου), officially the Charilaos Trikoupis bridge after the statesman who first envisaged it, is the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese to Antirrio on mainland Greece.

At nearly the same position as the previous one, but in a different time of day !

We Followed The Path

Before 2 weeks, Sotiris , George and I, started our small hiking expedition and we followed the path from Papigo to Drakolmini in Tymfi mountain.
This photo is right below Astraka peak, almost half way to Drakolimni.
It was a fantastic experience, although very very tiring.
We covered almost 18 km and reached an altitude of nearly 2100m (from a starting point of 900m).

Wow, it was an amazing experience !

Another shot of the Milky Way above Antiparos Island.

This time I processed the image a little bit (the previous had no noise reduction, sooc) and I applied some noise reduction through Camera Raw.
I think it's quite nice and still have a lot of detail (for web use, not for printing..).
And of course for this type of shooting (long exposures, night skies, etc) I always shoot raw to maintain detail.

Milky Way Above Antiparos Island

Just one day before leaving for my summer vacations at Antiparos island, my Nikon D800 arrived and I honestly didn't have the time to test it.
So, any tests I made were "out on the field", including this photo.

I wanted to test how a very good DX (APS-C) lens would react on a high perfomance FX body...
Although I knew from the start that I could use it only at 15 and 16mm (from 11 to 14mm its unusable due to vignetting), still I didn't expect that good perfomance !
Apparently it's a litlle soft at the corners but it's not a serious problem to me.
Thats all for the lens.

As for the body, I suppose that I can't say much as I'm very excited about it !!!

To Dive Or Not To Dive ?

First of all, this photo is real and not a fake one.

The point where the girl stands, is a really shallow one in the sea and kids go there to make a dive !
So, when I saw the girl thinking what to do, I had the opportunity to photograph her before the "jump" !

By the way, she did jump !

I'm a night creature ! That's for sure !

I feel fantastic when I'm out there in nature, all alone, through the night !
It is probably the best time to : a) capture some great shots and b) to get to know yourself even better.
To learn about your strengths and weaknesses, into the darkness and its mysteries.

Anyway, I was shooting a night timelapse (again), and this was one from the test shots I took before the final shooting.
