The Ferris Wheel at Chicago's Navy Pier... It was apparently modeled after the original Ferris Wheel, which was built for Chicago's World's Fair in 1893.

If I hadn't been nearly frozen, I might have gone up in it as by its height it probably offers an awesome view of the city. Instead, it will be my cliche shot for an amusement park; cliche with a twist: an empty amusement park. There were no other people around. HCS!

Another shot from the Carillon Nature Preserve: an alligator sunning himself... This was taken from the walkway that encircles the little lake. The walkway was about fifteen feet from this guy. It was pretty neat to see a real 'gator in the 'wild' like this!

Our hotel is right at the Carillon Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg. I saw lots of different birds, including a Great Blue Heron. I don't know what this one is so it is 'brand new' to me; I've never seen a duck quite like this!

Not really 'sad'... in fact, it's pretty cheerful. Took a few minutes after doing some errands to visit one of my favorite bridges. I didn't care much for the shots I took of the bridge but it felt so good to see a whole stand of these beautiful blooms waving in the slight breeze!

The only thing sad was the trash some people had tossed into the water near the pier; the wide-angle lens did not bring it close enough to really see. So today's shot is the decidedly 'un-sad' iris.

Sliding in at the end of the day... I played around with the contrast sliders on this one to try to remove the 'window fog'.

Flying from the west coast to the Midwest on Thursday we had the most amazing cloud show: everything from wispy tendrils to these great big puffy ones (too bad I don't remember my junior high science or the lessons the TV meteorologists are always giving about the different kinds of clouds). Some of them cast visible shadows on the ground below. I probably took 50 shots...

Not to 'bean' you about the head with it, but just a few more from my frozen day in downtown Chicago. Being a shiny silvery surface, this sculpture just begs to be 'slid' around. This is standing underneath it, looking up. The very tiny person right in the middle is yours truly...

Just about to take off to return home; through the window, I got this shot of a guy hard at work...spraying the deicer on the plane to ensure that the wings don't ice up in the frigid winter air! Not a job I'd want, but I'm sure glad someone does it!!

Wonderful dish at a fairly new restaurant in Wauseon, OH... The challenge is trying to take a food shot without disrupting everyone else at the table; so this was more of a snapshot than a photoshoot.

It was really good, though!

Check off one of the items on the Photo Bucket List -- The Cloud Gate, or as it is also known, the Chicago Bean.

Cliche tourist shot, night shot and for the scavenger hunt, out of my comfort zone: it was only about 20°F (and who knows what the wind chill was!) -- far colder than I'm used to!! I had actually started to leave the Millennium Park area when I decided that I should just tough it out because who knows when I'd get back to Chicago with enough time, clear sky and the approaching 'blue hour'.

Driving through some town in Florida, I saw the most beautiful scrolled iron fence ever; sadly, it was pouring down rain and we were on a time schedule so I did not get to photograph it...

The next day, I came across this fierce fence meant to keep intruders out of the lot it surrounded. There was a certain beauty in this one, though not nearly as obvious; the strands of barbed wire criss-crossed gracefully through the spiral of razor wire... HFF!

Another travel day; wouldn't you know, we visit Florida and they have a day of record rain... Caught a shot of this lone bird on a barren tree. Played around with some layers and textures. Black is a color, so it's a spot of color, too.

We crossed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on our way out of town this afternoon. What an awesome structure!

Not sure if it qualifies as a 'spot' of color but the yellow support lines looked pretty cool against the blue sky.
