The Empire State Building Celebrates Pride. Snapped through apartment window, so it's a leddle blurry. Love the multi-coloured lights -- a nice change from standard white. :)

A spectacular sunset over New York on a hot and stormy night.

I didn't have a tripod so I just used the one RAW file to create 3 different jpgs (exposing the sky, buildings & one inbetween) and combined them in Photomatix.

It is a rare thing when the sun and the clouds come together in such a spectacular way. It's even more rare that you happen to be standing in the perfect location with your camera in your hands and your batteries are charged :)

It's times like these that make me perfectly content.

2 weeks ago I was in Orlando, Florida for the Mashable Connect Conference. I was blessed with a room at the Contemporary Resort with a spectacular view of the Magic Kingdom. I snapped a picture of this view every day I was there, but none of them came out because the weather was either hazy, too bright, or cloudless and flat. I was almost going to give up on this shot, but the day before I was due to leave, a storm started building and produced some of the most spectacular clouds I've ever seen. I perched myself on the balcony and waited until the perfect moment and snapped this. I missed dinner, but it was worth it :)

This shot is made of 3 photos combined in Photomatix. I then used Photoshop to add more contrast, definition and warmth.

NY NY! Buildings fit together like puzzle pieces. It's hard to know where one begins and another ends. And jutting out from the centre is the Empire State Building which never ceases to impress me as it towers over the city.

I took this during my Mostly Photo Walk in NYC. Thanks to everyone who came out! It was great meeting you!

We had the worst weather -- grey and drizzly, so i had to add a lot of colour to make this picture interesting. I also added more distortion to the edges of the image to make the buildings look more cartoon-like.

Uploading this from a plane! Gotta love Virgin onboard wi-fi. I'm currently on my way to NYC for my next Mostly Photo Walk (Saturday April 23rd, 4pm in front of the 5th Ave. St. Apple Store).

I took this during my last trip to Las Vegas in the opulent Venetian Hotel. So much gold!!! :P I didn't have my tripod so I hand-held this sucker. There where tons of people, but I Ps'd them out. Sorry folks!

Another snap from my Vegas trip. Vegas is certainly an interesting place to shoot. There is no shortage of colourful venues... The Venetian is perhaps my favourite place to shoot... It's so faux fabulous in such a deliciously tacky way, you can't help but snap hundreds of picts.

The lighting was uber crappy and dark, so I actually set up a 3 exposure HDR shot, but there was too much movement with the two boats, so I ended up using the darkest shot and fake HDR'd it in PS. The image isn't tack sharp... something I couldn't see in frame when I shot it, but I can't go back now, so I'll have to live with it... curse my perfectionism :|

Snap of the Bellagio Fountains during the day. I got sucked in for a few shows.... somehow it never gets old. I think I almost prefer this reverse vantage point of the fountains with the faux fabulous Paris in the back...

I also love the subtle rainbow that appears in the water spray. :)

Back in Vegas for NAB after some travel to Orlando & NYC... Pretty nice view from the Aria! The windows are pretty dirty so it was hard to avoid the blotchiness... but you get the idea :P

I've been a bit slack on uploading shots here, mostly because I've been playing with my S95 a lot & posting to Facebook :P

Very cool interior of the Texas Capitol building that was surprisingly open at 8pm at night. I think it's also the first time I've ever seen a public building like this open after dark and ok with photographers using tripods and lying on the floor to take photos :P

Wanted to do something fashiony, and having no models at 3am last night I had to volunteer.

Photographing yourself is a nightmare. I see all these amazing self-portraits on Flickr and have no idea how these people do it.

To get in the right position, I turned on live view and held a small mirror behind the camera. Then, I switched back to camera view and used a shutter release to take the shot. Getting focus on the right spot was ridiculously hard. I pressed the shutter release button half-way to get focus, but I couldn't tell what the camera was focusing on. I have about 90 shots that focused on my nose and not the lollipop :P Ahh well, maybe it's just a matter of patience and practice.

The original pict wasn't very special and pretty flat because I was lazy and only used one light & didn't put any make up on :P so I added a pink fill layer in PS and some gradient lens flares across the photo.

Lovely to be back in SF again! Took a little night time photo walk down the street to the ferry building. I am still exhausted from my travels and getting back to work on a lot of new projects, including my new photo show, Mostly Photo on TWiT!! so I haven't had a lot of time to shoot... hoping to make up for it next week at SXSW in Austin! :)

Another travel day for me, so here's a snap from my London adventures. I managed to barely escape the 2ft of snow that was dumped in Victoria today! People on the west coast go all kinds of crazy when it snows. The roads were blocked off and cars were spinning off the road! The even de-iced the plane... something I've never experienced in Victoria.

I am definitely happy to be back in SF. Even happier to have my cinema display, amazon prime, hulu & my beloved 100mbs up and down internets :P

Really enjoying working on these nighttime HDRs - it's something I've never really shot before...but I have to say I really miss photographing people, so hopefully I'll get back to shooting portraits soon when I have a bit more time.

In other news, my iPhone photo app, Camera+ is back in the Top 10 US charts! Yay! Such a roller coaster ride being in the iTunes store...

Pete got me some lovely roses, so I thought I'd shoot some macros with my 100mm f/2.8L which I don't get to use that often. Plus, it always makes me sad that flowers don't last that long, so capturing a photo makes them live forever.

Since I didn't have that much daylight left when I shot this, I used my Wescott TD5 spiderlites to light the rose.

Even though the leaves were out of focus, I handheld the TD3 underneath them to bring out the vibrancy. Without the light the leaves were in the shadows and looked almost black. I lit the rose from the front and right side with the spiderlites and the left with window light. I played around with angles untill i liked the balance of light and shadow in the folds of the flower.

A little overkill on the set-up for a quick macro shot, but the lights seem to hang out permanently in my living room so why not use them?

Oh, and as always i added some water drops to the rose. A spritzer makes more circular droplets, but I couldn't find mine so I just hand placed these.

I bought my mum some flowers the other day, so I thought I'd take the opportunity today to use my lovely 100mm macro lens and shoot some abstract flower macros. I haven't used my 100mm very much since I've been traveling and shooting everything with my 16-35mm.

I spritzed the daisy with water drops hand held against the window that was backlit by the sun. I wanted just the tips of the petals and some water drops in focus. Since I was holding the flower I could get a lot more variation in angles in my shots (i'll put up some of my other shots tomorrow), but focus was really tough and my arms got sore... I know, such a whiner :P
