Tetons Rising! ~ A new view of the Grand Tetons ~ Webinar with Nik Software

Dan Ballard Photography posted a photo:

In an extreme effort to capture the Grand Tetons in a different way (and because it was so foggy in Jackson we couldn't even see the Tetons), my friend Joe and I deiced to go above the clouds and look back down. It took optimism to believe such a vantage point even existed, lots of convince store crackers and good snowshoes, but we made it happen. It was -23 degrees. (note: this is Not from Snake River Overlook, but from the Sawtooth range about 1.5 hours from Jackson via car and then some snowshoeing) The Tetons looked Huge from here climbing out of the clouds and I still can't believe I've never seen an image from this spot!! More to come....

Tomorrow at 10am pst I will be giving a free webinar on how I use Nik Silver Effex Pro 2 and present images in Zenfolio. Nik is limiting this webinar to 1000 people and it is almost completely full! Sign up HERE

If you are not using Silver Effex to process Black & White images you are missing out.....it is incredible!

A big thanks to www.borrowlenses.com/ , who helped me out in a big way last minute with some gear for this trip! They are really in the photographers corner. Check them out if you need to rent gear.
Mt. Bromo erupting over a valley of fog

To capture a moment in time when all the elements come together in perfect harmony is an amazing feeling. I had to be out of bed at 3:45am for a week straight to finally find these conditions, and I feel very, very lucky that I saw them at all. Even when Bromo is active, it can go for hours without erupting, and then it can go for days, erupting so often that visibility is zero. When I arrived in the area I never imagined I would get an image with Bromo erupting right at the peak of the morning light in perfectly clear conditions, with fog in the valley below. Out of the seven days we were in the area this was the only morning the fog rolled in.

I only have four spaces left for my workshop at The Colorado Photography Festival August 13-15. This is a three day festival and will be a great learning experience for those who want to improve their photography skills, and a very interesting and informative experience for photographers of all levels. There will be upwards of 60 like minded photographers in attendance, products raffles, a free photo book for everyone who signs up and of course the chance to hear some great speeches! (I also have openings left for my “Great Sand Dunes Workshop” and my one day “Barns, Windmills and Homesteads Workshop” HERE)

Hi All!!!

Sorry I have been off flickr so much as of late. I am leaving on my trip in three days!!! Everything has been nuts. Besides trying to get ready to leave, I have been working hard with my workshop coordinator to get a handful of workshops scheduled so that has been taking up most of my time.

Just a couple links that I am pretty excited about and wanted to share. I was invited to be an instructor at the Colorado Photography Festival August 13-15. I can't wait!! The other instructors are all excellent photographers and have thousands for publications between them. Check out the link in my PROFILE. It should be excellent!!

Also, I was recently interviewed by Zenfolio and made a featured photographer. If you have any interest check it out HERE. My site is through Zen and I love it!! Highly recommended!

Well that's all for now folks!!

I will be sharing images and trying my best to keep up with all your streams from Asia.

Dan
Banff National Park ~ Colorado Photography Festival ~ Workshop ~

Using the sun.

Hi all! Sorry about my lack of posting and commenting lately. I am going crazy trying to get things in order for my upcoming Asia trip. I will try to make it around to everyone's stream in the next few days.

I wanted to mention briefly a few ideas on using the sun in your photographs to add that extra something. The most commonly used and maybe most interesting way to use the sun is to make a sun star. This is a great trick because it is fairly easy to pull off, and can be used almost anytime you have a sunny sky. The idea is simply to position yourself (camera) in a way that the sun is about 90% blocked by an object you also want in your photo. This could be a building, a tree, a rock, or even the horizon or clouds like shown in the second image in the comments. Although you can't really see the star with your eye, you can move your head or camera side to side once you're close and see the sun completely disappear behind the object and with only an inch or two of movement watch it reappear. You want to be able to see the sun through the finder, but just barely. This is how you avoid unwanted ghosts and off color. Once you have your camera positioned (this is easier with a tripod, but not mandatory) you will need to set a small aperture ( larger F number like f18 or f22) and the lens will do the rest. At this point you can play with your exposure compensation button (check you manual or Google that if you don't know what it is. It is important!!) to get the exposure just right depending what you are trying to express in the image. This trick can really add some "magic" to your photography.

You can also use the sun in an image like I have above. This is much harder because you have to have just the right circumstances to pull it off. Normally this shot would not be possible, but in this instance there was a very thick haze in the sky that blocked much of sun's intensity. I also had to use a graduated neutral density filter to help hold the sun back. You can shoot the full sun in the frame in this way when there is a wildfire near by, thick fog that is just breaking up allowing the sun to come through slightly, or in other atmospheric conditions that diffuse the sun but don't block it entirely. You can also underexpose a considerable amount to make a silhouette with your subject and not blow the sun even on a normal day as in the bottom image.

FYI, I have heard that you can damage your camera if you leave the lens facing toward the sun for to long. I have no idea how long it would take to do damage, or if this is really true or not, as I have had zero problems with it and I shoot the sun in my images all the time. That said, I don't set my tripod up with the lens pointed at the sun and leave it there for five minutes either;)

Not HDR. I used a 3 stop Graduated Neutral Density filter and processed in Lightroom.

Thanks for stopping in!

Please view on black. It truly is a must for this image.

For those who don't want to read below this shot was taken during a severe wind storm in the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. I came back with several strong images, but I love the play of the light and blowing sand over the lines and form of the dunes. At least at the moment this is my favorite shot of the trip. I took about 30 shots of this scene trying to get the sand just right.

First off I would like to thank Miles Morgan for the inspiration to go in search of a great photo yesterday. I had been considering a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park for a while now, but I have just been to busy to make the trip. Wednesday night however at about 8:00 I came across this picture that Miles had recently posted. Folks, that is one hell of a picture. I looked at it for about 10 minutes going between admiration and jealously, when I decided the only thing to do was get off my butt and go in search of a powerful image. This and only this would make me feel better. I set my alarm for 1:15 the next morning and packed my gear. I arrived at the dunes at about 5 a.m. which gave me just enough time to hike to the top and get set up by 6:30 when the first color started. I had good luck and bad. The color was great, and the mountains in the distance were covered with snow, but the dunes where covered in snow as well, meaning all those great comps that come from the blowing sand were hidden. The shoot was not a success. No prob, I knew I still had one more chance at it. Later in the day the light was great, and most of the snow was gone, but I still had a big issue. The wind had picked up to 50-60 miles per hour, and was gusting to well beyond that. If you have never been to sand dunes in that kind of wind, just imagine being in a giant sand blaster for some kind of reference. It is rough. It was difficult to even stand up during the gusts, not to mention the sand pelting your face. I was pretty sure that the weather proofing on my D700 would save my camera, but I was really worried about my tripod. It was the first real test of my new Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head. I had used it enough to know how amazingly good it was, but that was the problem. I couldn't hardly stand to take such a (brand new!!) precision instrument into that hell for anything with moving parts. “This is why I have it” I thought, and so in I went. Finding a composition was the first battle. I hiked partly blinded for about a mile over the dunes (which was not a simple task) before I found the first area I liked, and the hiking was the easiest part! Once I found a shot I wanted, there was so much sand getting in my eyes I could barley look through the finder to compose it. I basically just had to point the camera in the right direction and hope. Between my watering eyes and extremely tired legs (I had been walking for most of the day, and I only had about 3 hours sleep) I wasn't in great shape physically or mentally, but every time I topped a dune and saw another amazing possible shot I made myself keep going. At this point you may ask “why would you take yourself and over $7000 worth of gear in to that mess? In that kind of wind you might not get a sharp shot anyway.” The answer is simple......the light was incredible!!! The mix of great light, killer clouds, and sand blowing over the dunes made for some incredible opportunities. I just couldn't walk away. I came back with the shot above and a few more images I love, so it was definitely worth it, and luckily nothing got ruined. Over the course of the day the tripod got so full of sand I was nervous it wouldn't make it, but even though the leg locks were grinding like crazy it came through like a champ. The ball head stayed perfect and free of grinding throughout, and the legs come apart and I can clean them without much trouble. I had to dump the sand out of my bag, and I have some time working on the camera, but after that everything should be good as new.

Thanks for the inspiration Miles!!!!

I will post some of the “out takes” below, and I will post at least one more of the keepers at a later date.

Thanks for looking, and Happy New Year to everyone!!!!
Thanks for the inspiration Miles!!!!

I will post some of the “out takes” below, and I will post at least one more of the keepers at a later date.

Thanks for looking, and Happy New Year to everyone!!!!

(Explored #2)

If you can't tell these shots are of a night time lightning storm. The top of the image is stars and clear night sky, and the bottom is a crazy storm being lit by hundreds of lighting flashes a minute. I was standing on the outside of the storm in perfectly calm conditions looking into the most dramatic weather conditions I have ever seen. It was not easy to get this exposed right, but luckily I had quite a bit of time to play with it and get it close. I doubt these will go over all that well on flickr, but I think in terms of uniqueness they may be the best shots I have.

I really can't decide which shot I prefer. I like that you can see more of the clear sky in the second one, and I think the comp is better, but the first one has the lighting bolt. (there were almost no actual bolts of lightning, only non stop flashes, so I think I'm lucky to have caught the small one I did)
Thanks for taking a look.

(Explored Front Page)

This shot was taken near Vang Vieng Loas. A grand and beautiful place in Asia.

I spent so many hours walking around this area it's not even funny. There are little paths though the rice which means there is water all around. This shot was taken near Vang Vieng Loas. A grand and beautiful place in Asia.

I spent so many hours walking around this area it's not even funny. There are little paths though the rice which means there is water all around.
"Banff Summer"

Dan Ballard Photography posted a photo:

Here is another shot from the most amazing morning I've ever seen.

We packed in over Healy pass the night before and camped, and decided to hike back to the top for sunrise. We left camp at 3am, but still underestimated how early the light show would start. We got to this ridge about 5 min after it started. This shot and the two below were shot within a few minutes of each other. They were a ways apart (I was running shot to shot) I would find a comp I liked, breath, take two shots, run to the next place, breathe....take two shots, repeat. That's not normally my style. I usually spend a lot of time finding a comp I like before the light starts, then shoot it though the peak of the sunrise. There were just so many amazing pics to be made here, and the light was changing so fast to suite different comps, I felt I couldn't just take one. I'm really glad I didn't as I like different things about all of these (and several more that are completely different).

No HDR

I used a graduated neutral density filter for this shot (and all my shots) I'm 24 so people think it's strange I don't do HDR, but I really think good old fashioned filters shape the light better.

Hope you like it, have a great day!
