On the Strand, London. Building started in 1866, opened in 1882, the architecture is Victorian Gothic Revival. Architect: George Edmund Street. A breathtaking building when seen in the flesh (so to speak).

The name 'Brockley' (an area of SE London) is derived from either 'Broca's woodland clearing', or a wood where badgers are seen (broc is the Olde English for badger)..
The Brockley Jack dates from the eighteenth century and was formerly known as Brockley Castle.
It received its present name about 1863 and was rebuilt in 1898. Like many formerly rural, isolated pubs it is said to have been a haunt of highwaymen. It's got a great menu.

Three generations of street signage! A 1913 Suffragette protest outside No. 13 Tomlins Grove, the home of Conservative councillor John Le Manquais, provoked a mounted police charge into the women & children, causing many injuries.

The Tomlin's Grove Conservation Area was designated in June 1969. In the 17th century, in the greater area of Bow, travellers were enticed towards the rural lifestyle that Bow offered, with many moving from London towards the east. It was only in the 1820s that urbanisation of the area began. The Bow area was predominantly populated with Irish inhabitants, reaching its peak in 1891. This is an area of particular special architectural and historic interest, illustrated by its rich history and significant architecture, dating from the 19th century and earlier. (The very top painted signage probably dates back to the 19thC)
