Sleep in this Sunday, the fog has rolled in, and it's an all-day-rain that washes away yesterday's ice. The falling water beats on the roof, a sound steady enough to become silent. Outside the window colors become muted into shades of blue and gray. Tonight we will put up the tree, but for today, let us sleep in.

Holly was upset at me for taking this picture. Our home is across the street and it was cold out, but I saw this and needed to photograph it. She had to wait through two crosswalk "walk" signs for me to get the camera set up and composed.

So she hurried me, and as a result I forgot to set the mirror lockup, resulting in camera shake.

I really messed up today, not bringing my camera with me to school. As I got out of class, I took my usual route through the Japanese Garden, to check on the Koi, and spend a couple seconds to myself. For the second time, I encountered a bird seeking lunch in the garden, this time a great Blue Heron, standing majestically on a snow-covered rock in the middle of the Koi pond. He stared at me, this perfectly round reptilian eye, and we just watched each other for a minute or two. I left, the Heron watching me, and rushed home to get the camera.

By the time I got back he was gone, so I took some photos around the area. As I got in my car to leave, I looked back and saw the big guy fly onto this roof and perch. I took out my digital camera again, and this time I got him, right before he flew off again.

She's trying to learn how to walk on leash correctly, and the snow makes it hard to teach her - she's always trying to jump in snowbanks...

Went on a photo walk today through the woods. Got nearly a foot of snow! Not much color left on the trees now, which makes what you find all the more striking.

Michigan's Capitol

I noticed the nice soft light after getting off work and decided to hurry over to the Capitol to see if I could get some photos. When I got there, I saw that someone else had much the same idea - a woman had her SLR mounted on a tripod and was beginning to set up for a few shots.

I said something like "Hey, no photography!" when I walked up carrying my camera bag and tripod. I was intending on getting her name and info but I didn't notice her leaving until it was too late. If you know her, or remember bumping into me, let me know.

I got some nice shots, wonder what hers look like!

Winter comes to Lansing for real. Snow has been a rare occurrence lately, and cold weather even more so. All the branches are covered with ice, and walking around it looks like the light is being refracted a million different ways, like a disco ball. Reminds me why I love Michigan.
