As the sun peaks over Jonas Ridge on this warm spring morning, illuminating the newly budded trees on the west side of Linville Gorge, it’s a great time to just sit and listen as the world awakens to a new day. The muted roar of the rapids below, the song birds singing as they scurry about through the underbrush and the thunder of a ruffed grouse as it takes flight in the forest behind you. All these and more are the wonderful sounds of the world around you as you just sit and listen…

One of our neighborhood critters in a tree beside our home. Although the birds and other wildlife have it pretty good in this location with the many birdfeeders and are only molested occasionally by our dogs, they are still rather shy if you try to approach. Truth is if the squirrel would stand their ground, these two canines would run in the opposite direction. This little fellow did allow me to get one image before he scurried higher in the tree and on the opposite side.

A young couple enjoying the warmth of the last half hour of sunlight as the available light begins to take on a more golden hue on the summit of Hawksbill Mountain. They were on spring break from their college, UNC Asheville, and were spending the week hiking, rock-climbing, and camping in the area around Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

Glorious sunset over western North Carolina, which made the short drive all the more enjoyable. The way the clouds built so rapidly in the western sky, made me wonder if I would have an opportunity to capture a decent image on this outing, however, I was blessed with a colorful view for the time I was there. Note the twelve crows near the center of the image flying to roost.

Late day view from Hawksbill Mountain to the summits beyond to Shortoff Mountain on the southern end. I especially liked the lighting, which had a golden tone and the angle which illuminated many of the crevasses in the rocks along the ridge adding to the visible detail in the rocks. The angle and use of a telephoto lens added to the looming aspects of the mountain ridge over the Catawba Valley beyond.

On this cold, windy later winter evening at the summit of Hawksbill Mountain, along the eastern rim of Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, I became acutely aware real quick that I would miss the sunlight when it disappeared behind the distant ridges. I had met a couple of friends for an attempt to photograph the Comet PanSTARRS, which is visible with the naked eye, during its appearance during the month of March 2013 (not satisfied with my resulting images). However, there are usually multiple subjects to photograph on any outing.

While meeting my son Scott and his family for a birthday dinner in downtown Hickory, I noticed that the sunset was in the direction of the west bound rails heading in the direction of Morganton. I’ve wanted to make a photograph of a sunset looking down a long stretch of tracks for a while, so the next day I used The Photographer’s Ephemeris to help locate a spot, with a clear evening sky. Still a couple degrees off, but this is what I managed to get yesterday…

Photograph from our hike yesterday along Babel Tower Trail in the northern section of Linville Gorge Wilderness Area in the northern part of Burke County. Probably the worst time of day to make an image with the harsh light, but I was pleased with the end results. This was my first hike on this trail, a rocky narrow trail that in spots was covered in snow and ice on the north facing sides of the ridges going down. Had fun, and last night after I got my stiff, aching bones and joints settled down, I slept like a baby…

We should never lose our sense of wonder, no matter what our age happens to be. Although this shot was staged, the young lady was mesmerized by the unique color and workings of a vintage light bulb, unlike any she had previously seen.

It is a rare individual who can gaze at a colorful sunrise and not be mesmerized for a few moments. Sometimes makeup gives a glimpse of what the day could hold. With the air temperature in the lower 20s not a hint of breeze, this was the sight that greeted me this morning from my home in Valdese, North Carolina.

Icicles hang from a fallen log across Jacob Fork River in South Mountains State park as the increased flow of water from recent rain rushes beneath. The air temperature during this outing with photography friends Mark and Paul was in the mid-20s. A exposure of 20 seconds @ f/22, ISO 100, using a variable neutral density filter.

An image taken at 10:34 pm from the dam at Clear Creek Lake, formerly known as Broughton Pond. The reflection of lights from the cities of Hickory to Charlotte reflecting off the scattered clouds and the waxing gibbous moon illuminating the scene in front of my position. Snow covering the mountain ridge can be seen, as well as the trees silhouetted against the night sky.

Moon Light Reflections

A partly cloudy, star filled sky over Clear Creek Lake, formerly known as Broughton Lake, reflects the mystical scene in the still waters. The mountain ridges with a light covering of snow make a beautiful backdrop to this nightscape illuminated by the Waxing Gibbous moon low in the sky behind my position. This body of water is located on the southwest side of South Mountain State park, a short distance off highway 64 south of Morganton, North Carolina.
