An image from my morning hike with fellow photographer Mark Houser to Plunge Basin at Linville Falls. When we departed Morganton at 5:30 am, we were hoping to have an hour to shoot the falls after daylight before the rain arrived. However, plans are made to be altered, so they say. On the hike in we could feel a few drops of rain, an just as we arrived at the river it began to pickup. During a lull in the precipitation, we did manage to get a few shot.

As the sun peaks over Jonas Ridge on this warm spring morning, illuminating the newly budded trees on the west side of Linville Gorge, it’s a great time to just sit and listen as the world awakens to a new day. The muted roar of the rapids below, the song birds singing as they scurry about through the underbrush and the thunder of a ruffed grouse as it takes flight in the forest behind you. All these and more are the wonderful sounds of the world around you as you just sit and listen…

The clouds that have engulfed the ridges begin to breakup as the sun warms the mountains of Pisgah National Forest. This is the northern view of Table Rock as seen from Brown Mountain Overlook.

One of our neighborhood critters in a tree beside our home. Although the birds and other wildlife have it pretty good in this location with the many birdfeeders and are only molested occasionally by our dogs, they are still rather shy if you try to approach. Truth is if the squirrel would stand their ground, these two canines would run in the opposite direction. This little fellow did allow me to get one image before he scurried higher in the tree and on the opposite side.

The great thing about being retired is the ability to enjoy many thing during the week while, in the past you would be confined to a factory or office. On this beautiful day, we began our hike in 30 degree temperatures and ended in mid-40s, perfect… Gary, Wendell and I, two other retired gents, spent the day hiking, talking and solving, what I think are some of our country’s largest problems, at least in our minds. Linville Gorge, what a beautiful area we have here in Burke County, North Carolina!

A young couple enjoying the warmth of the last half hour of sunlight as the available light begins to take on a more golden hue on the summit of Hawksbill Mountain. They were on spring break from their college, UNC Asheville, and were spending the week hiking, rock-climbing, and camping in the area around Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

Glorious sunset over western North Carolina, which made the short drive all the more enjoyable. The way the clouds built so rapidly in the western sky, made me wonder if I would have an opportunity to capture a decent image on this outing, however, I was blessed with a colorful view for the time I was there. Note the twelve crows near the center of the image flying to roost.

On this cold, windy later winter evening at the summit of Hawksbill Mountain, along the eastern rim of Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, I became acutely aware real quick that I would miss the sunlight when it disappeared behind the distant ridges. I had met a couple of friends for an attempt to photograph the Comet PanSTARRS, which is visible with the naked eye, during its appearance during the month of March 2013 (not satisfied with my resulting images). However, there are usually multiple subjects to photograph on any outing.

Hobo Highway #2
While meeting my son Scott and his family for a birthday dinner in downtown Hickory, I noticed that the sunset was in the direction of the west bound rails heading in the direction of Morganton. I’ve wanted to make a photograph of a sunset looking down a long stretch of tracks for a while, so the next day I used The Photographer’s Ephemeris to help locate a spot, with a clear evening sky. Still a couple degrees off, but this is what I managed to get yesterday…

The ribbons of steel gleam with a coppery hue as the late day sun sets beyond the mountain of Burke County. A group of men stand along the tracks, which brought to mind the thought of hobos portrayed in movies and song.

High water flows over Upper Falls at Linville Falls recreation area after a few days of rain. From this point on down river, through the rocks and over Linville Falls, the flow becomes more turbulent, on its trek to Lake James.

It is a rare individual who can gaze at a colorful sunrise and not be mesmerized for a few moments. Sometimes makeup gives a glimpse of what the day could hold. With the air temperature in the lower 20s not a hint of breeze, this was the sight that greeted me this morning from my home in Valdese, North Carolina.

A shot I’ve been thinking about since I saw a similar image on Flickr. Being a ‘low-budget’ photographer, I have to be somewhat creative in the process on making an image such as this; however it was pretty simple looking back. A cardboard box open on two sides, black cloth for the background, spoon with a “C” clamp holding it in place, duct tape to hold its position correctly a strawberry and a box of salt, and of course a camera, tripod and cable release. The golden color of the stream of salt is due to an overhead incandescent light.

An image from last night in southern Burke County, North Carolina on a farm where I spent many summer days as a young boy, working for my uncle. The house silhouetted was the first home my uncle built on this property in the 1930’s and is now falling to ruin. It is partially illuminated by a brief ‘burst’ of light from my flashlight and backlit by the lights of Morganton about 15 miles away. The Milky Way visible over the roof line made for an awe inspiring sight on this cold autumn night.

Climbing the cliff face of Shortoff Mountain, in Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, Burke County, North Carolina. Not for the faint hearted, these guys are several hundred feet from the bolder fields below. I prefer to watch from a ledge and admire their physical strength, nerve and climbing ability.

Late day view from Hawksbill Mountain to the summits beyond to Shortoff Mountain on the southern end. I especially liked the lighting, which had a golden tone and the angle which illuminated many of the crevasses in the rocks along the ridge adding to the visible detail in the rocks. The angle and use of a telephoto lens added to the looming aspects of the mountain ridge over the Catawba Valley beyond.

From a vantage point in Lenoir, North Carolina I was blessed with a gorgeous view of the setting full moon over the Blue Ridge Mountains on this morning. The woodworking industrial plant in the foreground was coming to life as the workers began their shift in the predawn darkness.
