A view of Oudewater from the Zuid IJsselkade (South IJssel Quay). The church in the background is the St. Michaelschurch, or as it called more frequently, the Great Church. This is a 15th century hall church, which was an expansion at this time of a gothic church on the same place.

The church has a 14th-century tower, the City Tower, with a half-hip gable roof - a type unusual in these parts - that is placed contrary to the church. The tower originally had a defensive function. The base is a north-south thoroughfare. The postwar carillon is in a dormer in 1601, replacing an older carillon.

The inventory include a 17th-century pulpit, which originally stood in Nieuwkerk (New Church) of Dordrecht and during was placed in Oudewater during the last restoration (1960-1968), and a gothic stone font, which has been buried for centuries. It originally stood in the baptistery, which disappeared after the Reformation.

In the church there is a monument to the 1613 local buried scientist Rudolph Snellius.

The church is used by the Reformed Church Oudewater-Hekendorp.

Langerak, a village on the southern bank of the Lek, in the province of South Holland. Photographed from the dike just outside Schoonhoven, near the town Willige Langerak.

The church is one of the oldest in The Netherlands. The back part was built in the 14th century, the tower in the 15th century and the middle part in the 16th century. In 1969 it is completely renovated and in 1990 there were climbing hooks attached to secure the safety of the inspectors of the Dutch Monument Inspection Board.

A lot of ice skating activities these days in the Netherlands. As temperatures continue to be sub zero, many pleasure rides around the polder landscapes are rode. This is part of the 2-Provinces Pleasure Ride, which was not official then. It is located in the Krimpenerwaard and Lopikerwaard, between Polsbroek, Haastrecht and Vlist. From my hometown Schoonhoven this track is easy to reach via the ice.

Lightshow at the windmill (HDR)

The windmill Bonrepas seen from a different angle. Normally, one cannot come on this side of the mill, as there is water between the road and the closed meadow. But thanks to the ice, you can cross the water and make this picture.

This is just before sunrise, at around 8.10 AM. I've never witnessed a sky that is this red and pink. Also evening skies tend to be red, but never this red. It was an overcast morning above me, but at the horizon it was opening up, giving this spectacular lightshow. Perhaps the cold temperatures of the night (-8 degrees Celsius), helped creating the red sky.

This HDR photo is composed of three shots, with the most natural conversion that is possible. No color correction was done, but the reason I chose HDR was because the mill itself was really dark on the original and the sky was a bit too light compared to the real circumstances.

A view of Schoonhoven in the direction of Vlist. Last three nights snow accumulated in the Netherlands, in Schoonhoven around 25 centimeters of snow could be found everywhere.

As you can see the sky is clear, which meant that temperature was as low -9° Celsius.

Taken during a short period of fog, near my house in Schoonhoven, the Netherlands. The fog was created by thaw: air warmed by the sun floated over the cold surface, creating fog.

Due to freezing conditions for about two weeks now, icicles have formed on a downspout. Water coming from the roof after a small period of thaw couldn't move down through the spout as it was frozen. It gusted over the edge and through cracks, forming icicles as it started to freeze on the way down along the spout. Hope it don't fall when I'm beside it!

A nice little path to a private terrain can be found in Schoonhoven. The snow on the ground and on the branches make it a nice effect. Someone already made footsteps in the snow, but I like the effect it gives to the photo.
