Lenticular clouds, technically known as altocumulus standing lenticularis, are stationary lens-shaped clouds that form at high altitudes, normally aligned at right-angles to the wind direction.

Approaching Storm

This is the closest view we got of the Towers. We hiked about one hour pass this point toward the mountains, but the approaching storm chased us away back to our lodge. Once you get closer to the mountains, your view of the Towers gets obstructed until you reach a valley right below the massif. The hike from the road to the Towers is quite long and most people spend a night camping along the way.

This area of the park usually offers a pretty nice view of the mountains, including the famous Torres del Paine after which the park is named. Unfortunately, out of the four days we spent in the park, the weather was pretty bad for two to two and a half days. Although the heavy dark clouds provided a lot of drama to the landscape, the mountains were invisible for the most part. I am determined to return to Patagonia in the future and try my luck again.

This is a different version of a similar photo I posted earlier this year. The vantage point is slightly different and I processed this photo in the latest version of Lightroom, which in my opunion does a better job in bringing out texture in the shadows. Overall, I believe this photo of Salto Grande is better than the previously posted one.

When we first arrived in the Torres del Paine National Park, we were greated by an approaching storm and rather strange light. The light in combination with the surrounding green hills, gray mountains and stormy sky produced surreal reflection on the glaciar-blue water in this small lake.

Periodically, Perito Moreno glacier advances over the L-shaped Lago Argentino, forming a natural dam which separates the two halves of the lake when it reaches the opposite shore. With no escape route, the water-level on the Brazo Rico side of the lake can rise by up to 30 meters above the level of the main lake. The enormous pressure produced by the height of the dammed water finally breaks the ice barrier holding it back, in a spectacular rupture event. The separated piece of ice depicted in this photo is a chunk of the dam left on land after such a rupture event.

The Explora Patagonia Hotel on the right side of this photo has a magnificent location and view, but with a price tag of over US$1,000 per night with a four night minimum, it caters to the top 1% (aka the "Job Creators"). I found the atmosphere inside the hotel to be rather boring and stuffy ;-)
