Dressed with flags and firing a salute at Hong Kong, 22 February 1898, in celebration of George Washington's birthday. This was only a week after the USS Maine blew up in Havana Harbor, and peacetime routine still prevailed.

Among the ships present are British heavy cruiser Cumberland or Suffolk, alongside the dock in right center; British minelayer Adventure, off the heavy cruiser's port bow; USS Augusta (CA-31), in the middle of the harbor in center; British submarine tender Medway, with submarines alongside, to the right of Augusta; and USS Canopus (AS-9), with "S-boats" of Submarine Squadron 5 alongside, seen end-on astern of Medway.

Photo taken at Wan Chai Gloucester Road, outside my grandfather's garage. My grandfather lined up his Vespas along the coastline at the right of photo.

These ice-cream bicycles were very popular in the early days until it was gradually replaced by my grandfather's ice-cream motorcycle. My dad told me that these bicycles were always found outside schools during recess or lunch time.

Good old Hong Kong......

See notes of demolished buildings in photo.

This photo reminded me lots of childhood memories. I had been to Hilton once for dinner when I was little. I always looked at the yellow Lion leon sign on top of the building next to Furama Hotel when dad drove past Connaught Rd everytime at night.

I had buffet at the rotating restaurant when young & drinks with friends at Furama Hotel during Uni days.

All these buildings were not there anymore. Only memories remain behind... I miss the good old days....

This photo taken by my grandfather was used by a newspaper as a press photo. I think the photo is about a British Minister participating the traffic exhibition held by HK Royal Police. I need to check the newspaper again to verify.

Hong Kong Hotel

The Hongkong Hotel was the Colony's first luxury hotel in Hong Kong. It was opened on Queen's Road and Pedder Street in 1868, and expanded onto the waterfront Victoria Harbour, Victoria City, Hong Kong in 1893.

The original hotel, opened in 1866, stood roughly on the site of the present Central building at Queen's Road Central and Pedder Street. In the late 1880s a six story north wing was built on the waterfront expanding the hotel, with entrances on Pedder Street, Queen's Road and Praya Central. Hong Kong's first deluxe hotel modelled after sumptuous London hotels, The Hongkong Hotel, from 1866. Competing in all respects with the owners of The Star Ferry Company, who owned the Peak Hotel, the management provided a special launch to meet arriving passengers on incoming P&O mail steamers and ferry them direct to the hotel's pier.

Even after the north wing burned down in 1929, the original part of the hotel, especially the large Gripps restaurant, continued to be well used by the public, but the hotel was eventually closed in 1952.

North Wing:

A six story north wing of the hotel facing the waterfront opened in 1893. It replaced the Melcher's Building, which itself was formerly owned by Dent & Co., where the west wing of its "princely" headquarters was located.

Completed in 1893; the hotel burned down on New Year's Day, 1926.

The site was acquired by Hong Kong Land in 1928, and Gloucester Tower was constructed in 1932. It was redeveloped into The Landmark in 1979.

Traffic Exhibition held by the Hong Kong Police in Happy Valley Race Course in 1956.

My grandfather teaching a young British boy to learn driving one of his specially custom designed mini cars. It can also be remote controlled, note the long attenna. The car installed with a Vespa motorcycle engine. These mini cars became a big attraction in the 50s-60s in Hong Kong.

The Ritz Carlton Hotel (note) is still standing at the time I took this photo. However, it is now demolished.

As shown in this photo, the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier for Star Ferry, built in 1957 has alreadyt been demolished to allow for reclamation. Reclaimation has been started at right.

Photo of the Eastern part of the Aberdeen Harbour. The building in the middle is the world's famous Jumbo floating restaurant .

Ap Lei Chau IIsland (left) shelters Aberdeen Harbour, creating an excellent typhoon shelter, and was a fishing village before the First Opium War.
