Not quite as good as my Las Vegas photo, but I like this because you can see almost all of LA proper here, from Oxnard and the Valley on down to South Central, Whittier and Pasadena to Santa Monica.

Well past midnight flying over the brightest spot on planet Earth, Las Vegas, Nevada.

The plane was banking hard to the left here, giving me a straight shot down from 22,000 feet.

Over 1,500,000 people, three airports, eleven separate municipalities, three interstate freeways, 75,000 hotel rooms, and billions of dollars in gambling money are captured in this single exposure.

the blur from the plane's engine exhaust gave this aerial a kind of 'tilt-shift miniature' effect--no photoshop needed!

1949 - farmland

Our area in 1949 was hardly recognizable. Middlebelt runs north-south through the center of the image, and Upper Long Lake is on the right. There are hardly any trees or houses--just a barn and a shed on a grassy meadow, some apple trees at the corner of Middlebelt and Square Lake Rd, and a large wetland that rests at the northern edge of Upper Long Lake. Pine Lake is in the lower left and Pine Lake Road runs along its northern shoreline.

July 6, 2007. As dusk fades into night, smoke clouds from the Zaca Wildland Fire stretch eastwards across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, California. The fire has consumed over 9500 acres of unoccupied mountainous wilderness. Southern California is suffering one of the driest seasons on record, making its wilderness areas vulnerable to fast-spreading fires.

1956 - our house appears

Four years later, the neighborhood is born. Our house finally appears as a small black box just below the diagonal house in the center of the image. The small swamp at the corner of Square Lake and Middlebelt (top right of image) has been dredged and transformed into a comfortable pond. Over 20 new homes have been built along Middlebelt and Pine Lake Road in the short time between the preparations for construction in 1952 to the neighborhood's relative completion around this time.

1967 - a complete neighborhood

By 1967 our neighborhood looks familiar to how it appears today. Trees have begun to fill in the empty spaces and another row of houses has been built just west of Middlebelt.

1952 - development surges

Merely three years later, development in our area surges. Sparked by the flight from Detroit, new suburban neighborhoods are cropping up along the shorelines of the Oakland County lakes. The canal around the swamp has been dredged, providing access to Upper Long Lake, and the barn and shed are gone. A huge canal has been dug just north of Pine Lake, and bright soil has been exposed as the builders perpare for more development.
