I usually miss the hay bales but I saw some combines harvesters yesterday so headed out to shoot the sun set amongst the bales. And what a sunset, absolutley beautiful! So here it is, my hay bale effort for 2011!

3 exposures (-2 / +2) blended in Photomatix and processed in CS3.

A week away in Wales had me planning plenty of sunrises and sunsets. Unfortunatley it didn't pan out that way thanks to the great British weather! I only managed 1 decent session of each... Boo Hoo. Still never mind, I was quite happy with what I managed.

I learnt something when I shot this, if you have your tripod in the water on a shingle beach, the out going tide WILL move it no matter how deep you try to push it into the stones. Not good when you are exposing for 10 odd seconds!

On my way back from a location scouting session for an up coming wedding, I drove past Wenlock Edge.
This gentleman was painting the vista in oils on canvas, it was stunning. He said the lightwas changing to fast, a problem photographers don't have to deal with in that respect!.
I liked the idea of the painter painting the landscape then me photographing the painter in the landscape, painting the landscape...! It reminded me of one of those repeating mirrors!
I finally got out for just an hour on Easter Sunday, the first time in many weeks. I powered down to Himley Hall to get the last hour before the park closed. I'd noticed this field a few weeks previous but the crop (whatever it maybe!) was to small to be interesting. It's a little bit bigger now so made the tracks in the field stand out nicely. I'd have liked a bit of movement but there was no wind! Still the light was beautiful!

Cregennan Lakes, Arthog, Wales

I made a special effort to go and find this beautiful place on my last visit to wales. After a pretty hairy drive up to the lake I was awe struck by how beautiful it was.
The light was absolutely awful as you can see but the colours where awesome. I love the fact that there is a boat house in this remote place!
I had a good walk round it and found several locations for a good sunrise, role on May!

Dudley, West Midlands

Further down the track from my previous post, I came across this scene. The sun light was pooring through the trees making the frost glow and sparkle. The leaves had vanished off the track and had been replaced by grass. This gave it an even more fictional feeling, just like being in Narnia...
Further down the track from my previous post, I came across this scene. The sun light was pooring through the trees making the frost glow and sparkle. The leaves had vanished off the track and had been replaced by grass. This gave it an even more fictional feeling, just like being in Narnia...

Ben Peasley Photography A.K.A Spotty Photo posted a photo:

Mailbox, Birmingham

I've seen so much superb urban HDR lately, I really wanted to give it a try. I've never shot in a city centre and didn't really know what to expect. I hoped if I got there early enough, it would be reasonably quite and fairly devoid of people.
I got into Birmingham at 6am this morning (Saturday 12.02), there was hardly anybody about but I only managed the one image and this is it. I decided I needed a wider lens and somebody with me to keep an eye out while I was shooting (I'm clearly a coward!).

This underpass connects the entrance to the Mailbox with Navigation Street. I love the colours of the lights and the purple ambient light.

It's a 5 image pano comprising of 9 shot HDR images (+4/-4 exposures).

Hope you like my first attempt and thank you for looking!

I love going for a wonder to see what I can find. On this particular day, I have to confess, I got a bit lost. I was following the sun through the trees in this wood and suddenly realised I'd lost my bearings. I roughly gaged which way I thought I should head and began trying to make way through the trees.
After 30 mins or so I can across this path, completely covered with trees, which in turn where covered with hoar frost. It didn't look like anybody had walked down it for a very long time luckly for me. There was a different shot every 10 feet! This was my second favourite.

Thank you for taking a look

It's been a while!

I finally got to do a single sunset while I was in Wales a couple of weeks ago and here it is.
It's been so long since I have shot a landscape, it took me 30 mins to remember what to do!
Thanks for looking!

I went to Dudley Zoo for the first time in nearly 2 years today. Since my last visit they have had a troop Baboons and this is the male.
Now from a technical point of view, this is pretty awful. It was shot at something like 3000+ ISO because it was raining, he was under trees and I needed a decent shutter speed so it’s choc full of noise.
His eyes just look so sad, I wonder why.

This is some what of a first for me in many respects! It's my first ever portrait on flickr! It is also my first effort with my new studio lighting. I love learning new things and the challenges it brings. I quite like the being stripped of the certainty of what I know; look at the scene in front of you, check the composition, aperture, ISO, focus point all sorted then shutter release. It can, for me at least, become mundane and unexciting at times. Where as shooting with gear you have never used before (and don't know how to use properly!) in a way that you have never shot before can makes things quie exciting again!

I'm reasonably pleased with it, there is inevitably things I will change for next time, move the key light further back, add another rim light on the left etc, etc, but you live and learn don't you?
It's great, I'm like a kid at Christmas!

St. John The Bapist Church, Hagley, Worc.

I was early for an appointment yesterday so I thought I'd drop into the little church on the hagley estate. I'd been once before but not been happy with what I shot so it was time for another go. I don't tend to like shooting in the late morning so I used it as an excuse to have a go at a couple of vertoramas (vertarama?). I'm quite pleased the result!

Sometimes when I have processed an image I sit and look at it and begin to wonder what drew me to the composition. Some images I have shot it was quite clear, pre-planned or just jumps out at you. Others, like this one, I just don't know. I remember thinking I liked the grave in fore ground and the rest of it is a blur. Still it turned out ok I think!

4 shot vertorama, each image in the 'rama was a 3 image HDR (-2/+2) HDRs prepared in Photomatix, stitched & processed in CS5 converted to mono in Silver Efex.

Barmouth, Wales

Due to the very low cloud my intended spot for shooting the sunrise had been wiped out and the cafe we have breakie at being closed until 9am, we went for an explore.
I took a single track road just outside of Barmouth that lead up into the hills beyond. We followed the road until it turned into a mud track and decided it was best to stop. I got out and followed the public foot path up over a small hill and passed what was left of a sheep that had met a particularly grizzly end. As I walked over the crest of the hill this wonderful scene greeted me.
Unfortunately, alot of the detail in the cloud around the sun was lost when I converted it for the web but I still like it.

Barmouth Harbour, Wales.

Flat skies, that's what greeted us this weekend. There's nothing worse than gray cloud with no definitionis there? Just before we left there was a break in the cloud and the sun came out. It only lasted a few minutes, just enough time for a couple of images!

This is the first one. I liked the blue colour in the boat and the yellow buoys.

9 exposure (-4/+4) image, tone mapped in Photomatix and processed in CS5.

Thanks for looking

Cader Idris, Wales.

I do love this view, it appears at least another 3 times in my photostream shot a different times of year. This is what I had been waiting for though. A combination of snow, ice and heavy frost, the sun coming up just enough to kiss the top of the mountain.
I like the bluey coldness of the pic with just the little bit of orangey, pink warming it up a bit.

I did get a better image on the way home, low cloud pooring of the summit, turned pink by the sunset but I lost the memory card - boo hoo.... :(

Thanks for looking!

I wanted to shoot something different and didn't fancy travelling far so I went out the Bumble Hole in Netherton this weekend (30th Jan 2011).
I saw a lecture by Peter Clarke this week and his black and white images where utterly inspiring. I like colour and lots of it, I rarley venture into mono landscapes but having seen Peters images wanted to give it a go. This is my homage to him!
I appear to swapped my love of saturation for a good dose of contrast but I'm happy with the result.
