The old empty stadium seats cliche. I should have taken this from the other direction to get better overlap of the chairs and to get better lighting from the sun. But my 7 year old was tugging at me to leave.

HCS! Bridges are cliche, right?

This is the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge. Traffic began using the Hoover Dam Bypass on October 19, 2010. Prior to completion of this project, the existing route of U.S. 93 used the top of Hoover Dam to cross the Colorado River.

This is my first entry into a new group called Get Pushed!!. It's a wonderful idea created by JordyR.

I was paired with Huub Zeeman and he astutely challenged me to do a panning shot. A panning shot is where the camera tracks a moving object in the foreground with a slow shutter speed in order to create a blurred background, and thus capturing a sense of motion.

The difficult part of this for me, is I have a point & shoot and cannot directly control shutter speed. You may have seen SLR's in my EXIF data on some photos. But those were always cameras I borrowed from friends or family. Greater than 90% of my photostream is with my own camera, a bad boy Sony DSC-W220.

In order to get a panning shot, I had to "trick" my P&S. I can adjust ISO and set that to 100. Then what I would do is point my camera in the shade, hold down the shutter halfway to set the exposure at a low light condition (i.e. slow shutter), and then move my camera to the moving object I wanted to pan. The problem with this, is that both aperture and shutter speed are set for low light. I can't control them independently (I'm not even sure my camera really has these two items physically, they are probably just electronic equivalents). So this method would give me the slow shutter speed I wanted, but also would open the aperture very wide and cause a lot of my shots to be over exposed. This is what you see above. It gives it a high key effect. But I kind of like it! So I'm also submitting it to HSS cause it has a slide look. Below, is a shot that I got lucky on and it wasn't too overexposed (you can see the street is overexposed).

Anyway, this was a great experience. I learned a lot and I think I'm definitely ready for a DSLR now!

Inside Hoover Dam. The lower pipe is called a penstock, is 30 feet in diameter, and delivers 90,000 gallons of water per second!

The green color was already there, I just kicked it up a notch, cause it's Slider Sunday! HSS!
