Sunset behind Grand Teton pinnacle

Rays and shafts of light dance behind the peak of the Grand Teton mountain (13,775 ft (4,199 m) as the sun begins to set directly behind it. This was photographed just as the sun dropped behind the peak. Because the mountains rise almost 7,000 feet above the valley floor, it will be another 30 - 40 minutes before the setting sun starts to cast its orange and red colors in the sky. This is why the sky is still blue near the corners of the photo.

Double Arch - night time exposure - Arches National Park

During a time exposure (about 10 minutes), I "painted" these sandstone formations with multiple flashes from a 600 w/s battery-powered studio strobe (with a large parabolic reflector) and a powerful, hand-held spotlight (1-million candle power). My wife, Linda, opened and closed the shutter while I ran around in the dark, painting and tripping over rocks :)

Double Arch is a close-set pair of natural arches. The larger opening has a span of 148 feet (45.1 meters) and a height of 104 feet (31.7 meters).

Balanced Rock - night time exposure - Arches National Park

Balanced Rock is one of the most popular features of Arches NP. The total height of Balanced Rock is about 128 feet (39 m), with the balancing rock rising 55 feet (16.75 m) above the base. The big rock on top is the size of three school buses.
