River runners* exploring a natural, water-formed cave (Redwall Cavern @ mile #33) along the Colorada River, in Grand Canyon National Park.

This photo was taken with my new 12MP GoPro Hero3-Black Edition—it's very sharp 170º angle lens was the perfect solution for capturing this large cave in one shot (I'm against the back of the cave).

Free range rooster chicken

IronRodArt - Royce Bair ("Star Shooter") posted a photo:

Re-posted. A wild or feral rooster chicken in Kauai, Hawaii. The males are pretty striking and colorful birds, and they are everywhere in Kauai! View LARGE and on Black (incredible detail).

Why Does Kauai Have So Many Wild Chickens? If you’ve been to Kauai then you’ve probably noticed all the feral chickens. They’re hard to miss. I’d imagine just about everyone who has been to Kauai has vacation photos of the waterfalls, the beaches, beautiful Waimea Canyon, and then there’s the obligatory photo of the chickens (I tried to make this one as iconic and striking as I could -- they are after all, pretty magnificent birds, even if they are a little obnoxious at times :). So what does Kauai have so many wild chickens? Most people suggest that the feral chicken population can be traced back to when Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in 1992. It’s been reported that the devastating hurricane destroyed a number of chicken farms (that's what The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook suggests happened). Wikipedia suggests that sugarcane plantation laborers in the late 1800s and early 1900s brought and raised chickens (for eating and cockfighting) and many got loose over the years and multiplied. I think it's probably a combination of the two.

The Iao Needle, in the Iao Valley, Maui, Hawaii. The traditional name for this 2,250 foot high peak is Kukaemoku. This peak is known as the phallic stone of Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the ocean.

During periods of warfare, the peak was used as a lookout by warriors. It was here that some of the Maui warriors retreated from the forces of Kamehameha I during the Battle of Kepaniwai.

A thousand years ago, Hawaiians gathered at Iao Valley to celebrate and honor the bounty of Lono, god of agriculture, during the annual makahiki festival. Today, this area is still recognized as a very special place for both its spiritual value and spectacular scenery.

The West Maui Mountains and the lush Iao Valley, Maui, Hawaii. Just a few hundred feet head, and to the right is the Iao Valley State Park. A thousand years ago, Hawaiians gathered at Iao Valley to celebrate and honor the bounty of Lono, god of agriculture, during the annual makahiki festival. Today, this area is still recognized as a very special place for both its spiritual value and spectacular scenery.

It's very GREEN here. I photographed these waterfalls from an open helicopter (doors off) near the summit of Puu Kukui in the West Maui Mountains, Maui, Hawaii. Honokohau Falls is said to be the tallest waterfall on Maui. It plunges in two tiers for a total of 1600 feet -- making it the second highest falls in the United States (only Yosemite Falls is higher). Puʻu Kukui is one of the wettest spots on Earth and the second wettest in the state of Hawaii after Mount Waiʻaleʻale, receiving an average of 386.5 inches (9,820 mm) of rain a year!

Three trees point skyward from the bottom of Wall Street in Bryce Canyon National Park - a popular, narrow, canyon hike in the 'Navajo Loop'. This area remind one of a "slot" canyon, except there is no stream running through the bottom. Although the dominant tree species in the park is the Ponderosa Pine, these three Douglas Firs ended up growing in the bottom of this canyon! Note: If you view the above map at its highest magnification (in either the "Hybrid" or "Satellite" view), you can actually see these 3 trees where I have set the location pointer!
Redwood Forest

IronRodArt - Royce Bair ("Star Shooter") posted a photo:

A grove of tall, old growth Redwood trees in Northern California. These Redwoods are in the Simpson-Reed Grove (Simpson-Reed Trail), which is within the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. (Photographed on Fujichrome film with a Mamiya 6x7cm, 50mm lens. ISO 50 - f11 - 1/2 second - See CC filtration below.)

Evil Lumber Companies? "The names of several memorial groves [like the Simpson-Reed Grove] ... reflect the generosity of lumbermen who donated them..." -- from the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park brochure.

Redwoods Photo Tip: You'll notice that the color balance of this image is much warmer than most images you'll see of the redwoods. That's because this photo was taken with two Kodak gelatin Color Compensating (CC) filters over the lens -- a 10 CC Yellow, and a 10 CC Red (a little more amber in color than a 81C filter). This is because the tall redwood forests filter out much of the warmth of the sunlight (start out at 5000 degrees Kelvin) before it reaches the forest floor, where the light now becomes closer to about 4000 degrees Kelvin (quite bluish-cyan). In order to have a more correct coloration, you need to compensate with Color Correction filters. This is made so much easier today with your digital camera's White Balance settings. Instead of using the "Auto" White Balance setting ("Average" on some cameras), switch to the "Cloudy" setting (about 6500 degrees Kelvin), or the "Open Shade" (about 7500 degrees Kelvin) setting. These settings will warm up your images and make them much more pleasing. (Of course, you can just shoot RAW, like most professionals do, and fine tuning your images in post production; however, it is always best to set your white balance correctly so that your camera JPEGs will look as good as possible for quick editing -- just in case you have a deadline and don't have time for post.)
